Hello everyone, just about to start the grow. I am going to be using 100% super course peralite #4, in 1.5 gal. waste baskets. I am concerned about the roots having something to anchor to. Has anyone used hydroton in the bottom 2inch res area? can't imagine it could hurt. Anyone see any problem with doing this?

Hydroton is a proven rez medium, but IMO #4 perlite is the best rez medium. But I understand that with using a tapered bucket the smaller footprint on the bottom tends to make them less stable, and the hydroton will give you more weight.

So go for it and keep us posted, best of luck with your hempy adventure.

I suggest you add vermiculite too. That will provide the anchoring you will need. I think you will find that your medium will wick and hold moisture better with verm in it, IMHO. Good luck on your grow!

I did #4 perlite 100% in one gallon water bottles last run and had no issues...they were small plants though.

Bit the bullet and put my 8x8 up..planted some berry bomb x blue dream seeds i made and next up is getting all my seedlings and clones into larger containers. Went to the dollar store and got 1.5 galln buckets for a buck each. spray painted half of em to make em darker but ran outta paint.

Be kind in your critisism when you see my from seed plants...i basically ignored them for a few weeks and almost had em die of thirst due to hectic work schedule. Soooo they look like shit right now but after a week of treating em right their new growth is greening up..securedownload-301.jpgsecuredownload-282.jpg

This tent is so fucking huge...i think i need two more 600s...now to talk the woman into it. For time being got 1200 watts in there and thinking about hanging my 400 mh vertical in there for this grow. Shooting for 50% female from my seed plants which will give me 41 girls to flower. Think with another two weeks in veg to grow up my clones and green up my seed plants i can get a nice 4x8 canopy

Oh while vegging i have been fimming a little and super cropping. Am going to top every seed plant before flower as well. Which serves the purpose of preserving and real nice pheno i might find and having a more even canopy.

I run #4 perlite as well. Posted about it a bit back. I have two different styles going. Both top feed but some are in air pots while others are in 3 gal buckets inside 5 gal buckets with a tiny res on the bottom. Both drain and recirculate back to the res.

Plants are growing great and its super easy and cheap compared to other things. Perlite needs to be on a water system seeing it retains nothing pretty much. My plants root great right from clones straight to the perlite buckets.

i don't use perlite preferring coco in it's stead but i do use either hydroton or grorocks or gravel or lavarock in my res, depends on what i have handy. ...i like it because these all provide weight at the bottom of the pot for stability and all seem to provide a very happy environment for my roots.

here's a couple shots of my current grow which is three weeks in when these were taken (i think these have grorocks in the bottom).

Enjoy the space while you can, it's gotta be nice to zip the tent closed behind you and play with the plants. Once you get the wifey to let you purchase anonther $600 worth of lights you'll HAVE to fill er' up.

here's a pic of the air pots in a 36x36 inch flood table that drains back into reservoir. Won't be using the flood table to long though. If i was going to veg in the air pots i would but i plan on making an aero super stoner double vegger so i can get my plants about 12-16in tall and just move from aero vegger to air pots in flower.

This was my first idea but this is a tree growing way and i'm not aiming for that so i re thought it and came up with just moving to air pots once. less work for the vertical rather than only 3 5 gal plants per shelf.

this is what the air pots will be moving to for flowering each shelf will have a 10inx45inx3in flood tray draining into the tray underneath until the last tray drains back into the res.

Also going to be switching to those top feed halos that are new so its less lines and a mess every where.

Anyone here place seeds directly in 100% perlite when their seeds start to show a root? If so what is your process? Do u water every day to keep moist? Do u put a dome on top to keep in moisture? I have a heating mat and a dome if u think it will help the seed! Any help would be nice and thnx guys!!
i've got a little seed starter routine for hempys that I got from one of the internet board giants, DocBud--mini-hempy cups for seed starting, particularly geared for low stress germination and easy transplant to hempys...take a solo cup and put a hole about 1/4 to 1/3 up from the bottom. Fill with 100% perlite just past the hole. Fill the rest of the way with a mix of 50:50 perlite: FoxFarm Ocean Forest. Top the mixture with 1 inch of straight FFOF (too keep the seed dark and moist). I soak my seeds for 24-36 hours then they go in the mini-hempys, 1/4 inch deep, under a dome, with some bright lights above (5")--right now i've got a 90w LED UFO and a 105w 65K cfl over 9 mini-hempys. In two days or so they'll spring to life, just keep the soil moist, the environs warm and humid, and you should have no problems. If all you've got right now is perlite, and you don't feel like picking up any FFOF, think about rapid rooters--they can hold a little more moisture, a little longer than straight perlite, and work well going into hempy. If you're dead-set on germ'ing in perlite, you might want to get a mist bottle to hit the top of the cup with moisture 3 or so times a day to make sure they don't dry out. Best of luck mate,

Hey WoH,

Just got excited because I've started 9 girls in the mini-hempy cups I described a few posts earlier...
I soaked: :leaf: 5 Sour Diesel crosses, 3 purple kush, and 1 northernberry :leaf: for 36 hrs in RO H2O, then they went straight into moist, room temp mini hempys--solo cups with 100% perlite the first 1/4-1/3 passed the hole, 50:50 perlite:FFOF the rest of the way above the perlite, and then straight FFOF for the top 1" of the cup. The seed goes 1/4 to 1/2" in the FFOF to keep it dark and moist. all 9 are under a dome with a 90w LED and 105w 65K CFL about 5" above so when they break the surface they'll be greeted with bright light and humid warmth. No pics right now because, really, who wants to look at a solo cup with top soil?

super pumped to have this started, i'll pop a thread up in the hempy links thread (thanks moebius/w.o.h!) once I start my journal for this one...you're all welcome to come comment in there as well! I'd love for this to be a great communal learning experience :bigjoint:

For those curious as to where this is headed--I'm going to be doing 2 or 3 gallon hempys, 100% perlite and OC+ with ph'd tap water and molasses @1tbsp/gal. I will also be trying to use some compost teas (esp. at transplant) and will be considering cal/mag--or other ways to get calcium and magnesium into my hempys b/c my water analysis shows i'm low on calcium, my TA is 38, and my avg. pH is a little on the high side--so if anyone adds like epsom salts or dolomite to your 100% perlite hempys let me know what you do. otherwise, i'm open to other ideas--i also have EarthJuice products for supplementation (grow, bloom, catalyst, & microblast). let me know what yall think!

Be easy,

I have no problem recycling, but I don't try to recycle soil, ran into some probs doing this before. I have to use 3/16" opening screen when rinsing to be able to flush out all the osmocote prills. It's fine for the chunky perlite but the coco coir blows through the screen faster than the prills. I'm thinking of getting a brick of the coco chunks and mix it with the coir, to see if I can get some return.
...i feed Jack's Pro which i switched to from MaxiBloom and i like them both because neither is a time-released formula so my 2 week, pre-harvest flush seems to be enough to flush out any residual nutrients, ...i actually won't pull my harvest until my plants start to yellow so i've sometimes gone past a 2 week flush.

...and all i do post-harvest is to scoop out the rootball and shake free as much coco as i can which is close to 90%, i don't lose much, lol. ...anyway, once i've shaken out all the rootballs and dumped them into the compost i pour in about a gallon of water that i've added some pond cleaner enzyme product i got at Lowes and this is new, i've only been doing this for about 3 months so school is still out on whether or not this is a good idea, ...i also added the enzyme to my last harvest during the flush, ...i don't know if this is even necessary as i'd been using and re-using my coco for several cycles without issue but i figured i'd give it a try as i always end up with some coco tossed in the compost with the roots and some roots in my coco bin and i'm thinking the enzymes will help break down those old roots.

...i have no personal experience with the Osmocote other than what i've read and having seen it at Lowes and the like i know it's readily available but have you considered switching to a nutrient that isn't time-released?

wow guys ive really been thinking about throwing out the pump ( makin aerocloner outta it) and going back to hempy's ... im having such a hard time with my homemade hydro system https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/616896-400w-4-lightmover-hydroton-rockwool.html#post8585574
...yeah buddy! lol, i haven't used any of my pumps in more than a year! ...hempy's and KISS have made my grow EASY, ...it almost feels like i'm cheating!

Amazing work bozo! Those are beautiful! Is that a 600 watt in there?
thanks for the props man and you are correct, ...in fact that is a brandy new Eye Hortiluxe 600, ...i finally broke down and bought me a high-end bulb and i believe i'm glad i did, ...the jury is still out but this current grow has had that new 600 almost from the beginning and they are looking amazing! ...i love me my coco hempy's and my Jack's Pro, ...so phuckin' easy! ...lol.

peace, bozo
