New Zealand Outdoor Grow 2012/2013

Hey Dylan, first time kiwi grower here. I have a question about watering. Am i right in saying you let the rain do all the watering? Because i have 3 small plants very near my house that i have been watering everyday. They are only small about 20cm at the moment. In your opinion should i stop watering them and let the rain do the work? or keep up what i'm doing? it hasnt rained much where i live (lower north island)

Hey man. I try to water my plants only when they need it. About every 3 days or so. Depending on the whether.

20cm is quite small at his time of year. a couple more weeks and they are flowering.

What ferts are you feeding it? Give it a dose of Nitrogen.

Watering a plant every day is not a problem as long as you do not over or under water. I have various herbs and vegetables growing in pots outdoors. They all sit in a dish / pot base so I can see how much water they are absorbing every day and water accordingly. I also feed my plants via the water.

With the current NZ weather, depending on location, a healthy plant will be happy to have plenty of water. If you water too infrequently the volume of water the plant needs for optimal health and growth does not change so a lot of it may run-off the soil and not be available to the plant.

There are several good things you can do to prevent mold. I had ZERO mold last summer - and the year before I had too much mold. First of all, try to keep the plants in well ventilated areas with good air flow. Dry areas. The dryer the season the less mold you'll have. Also, make sure the plants receive ALL their micro-nutrients. Avoid overwatering. Apply anti-fungicides and anti-insect sprays diligently and sparingly. You need to apply them at least twice during your season - but not near the harvest. And you will have little to no mold. Add a little bit of sulphide ("rotten egg smell") to your watering and that will really make your plants strong. Selecting strains that have genetic strength against mold is also a huge plus.

in northland maybe, it gets sub tropical up there but generally no. it gets too cold and dont grow in the winter, iv tried before.
Thanks for the info. I was just curious. Have you ever tried some of the hardy highland strains that might be able to handle the cold? Highland Nepalese maybe? I don't know, but it might be worth a try. New Zealand was a place I was considering if I ever decide to move from the US. I 'd prefer somewhere I could grow all year. I live in Hawaii and we can grow year-round here. Sativas rule here though. A lot of dense indicas will mold, which is fine; I like sativas significantly more anyway. Thanks again.

yeah you're probably right, matanuska thunderfuck could easily be a strain to grow all year round here if you lived in the right place in nz. do you have any Hawaiian landrace strains?. when do plants flower over there?. cheers

Are you guys able to grow outdoors year round there or only during the summer? Just curious.
No just between Oct and April, bloody freezing there rest of year. :-P
In hawaii the days are pretty much the same all the time ,in NZ daylight hours are as low as 10 in mid July.

Cannbis isn't native to Hawaii, so no, there aren't any actual Hawaiian landrace strains, but the first major strains grown here were Thai and Colombian or Mexican landraces. Those strains grow really well here and were major players in the commonly known Hawaiian strains, i.e. Kona Gold, Puna Budder, Mowie Wowie, Elephant, Blue Hawaiian, Molokai Frost, etc.

And there are basically three growing seasons here. One of the seasons we call "Long Season", and two of the seasons we call, "Short Season". Long Season goes from March to September. The daylight hours increase to 13hrs and 25min here, so sativas will grow from Mar. to June and then go into flower as the daylight decreses back to 12/12. During short season plants just go into flower right away because the hours stay below 12/12 until the March. So, what a lot of guys do here, during short season, is either veg there plants totally or partially indoors and then put their plants outside to flower. You can just grow from seed too during short season, but the plants don't get that big. It sounds like it should just be broken up into two seasons (Long Season/Short Season), but the two short seasons affect the bud in different manners and the plants grow differently during that time period.

Do you guys mostly grow sativa and hybrid strains there? Or can you grow heavy indicas too? Sativas reign supreme over here for growing. Most heavy indicas don't do that well here because of humidity, but there are some good hydrids that can handle it.

Does it actually freeze there in most areas? That would pretty much rule NZ out for me as a future place to move; I'm a sissy when it comes to the cold, lol. But it sure does look beautiful there and you guys have a great reputation here in the States for being friendly and hospitable. Too bad I hate cold weather.

oh man you're so lucky getting to grow that much.

in the old days nz locals only grew bush sativas, its only been in the last couple of decades that nz has come into contact with indicas. we got a landrace afghani that we have still got now, costed 500 dollars 15 years ago just for that cutting, totally worth it. everyone says its the best growing strain that i have given a cutting to, it grows physco outdoor. finishes 2nd week in march. indicas grow the best in this climate. have you ever grown maui wowie? the maori people over here originate from hawaii as some of your language is similar to ours. we only really have one season over here which is from seed is september vegging to mid january-start feb. from clone, realistically end of october planting to steer clear of pre flowering which stunts the plant for a month at least. this year i put out some afghans middle of october and the went into pre flowering and stunted. New Zealand is a lot like hawaii, we're both some of the best outdoor cultivators in the world. like dylan said; lots of tourists say we have the best shit in the world. i bet people say that to you guys as well

That sounds like a pretty rad Afghan strain you got there and it sounds like you more than made back the 500 dollars. I shouldn't have said that heavy indica strains don't grow well here, but they don't grow well where I live. All the islands have wet and dry sides. I live on the wetter side of Maui, so Indicas don't do well here because of mold, but there are probably guys on the dry sides that can grow Indica strains without mold. The dry sides of the islands are literal deserts, no joke. It only rains 6-14 days a year and the precipitation doesn't equal much; maybe a 2-6 inches a year. If I lived over there then I'd probably give some Afghan landrace strain a try. Doesn't matter too much because I prefer the Sativas anyway, but it would just be fun to grow some indicas.

I haven't grown Maui Wowie. Sad to say, but that strain is probably extinct or very near extinct. Some old grower might still have it around, but only God knows. A lot of the early strains went extinct with Green Harvest (the aerial eradication program) because they grew so big and were easy to spot. Some of the early strains grew over 20 feet tall (6+ meters, also no joke) so they were easy pickings. I know some seed company sells a strain called Maui Wowie, but I doubt it's the real deal.

I didn't know the Maori originated from Hawaii. That's interesting. I know the Hawaiian and Tongan languages are pretty similar too, but I didn't know that about the Maori language. It's pretty mind blowing how great of sailors the Polynesians were; they got around everywhere in the Pacific with fairly basic sailboats. Crazy.

And I'm sure New Zealand's got some incredible outdoor for sure. I could see your climate being amazing for cannabis. And yes, there are also some amazing outdoor growers here too and the climate here is amazing for almost any plant including cannabis. Cannabis loves the Hawaiian climate. This climate here, brings out the fullest potential of a strain and most of the time it'll take people to a whole different plane compared to Mainland grown weed. People say we have the best stuff in the world too. We get a lot of stuff imported nowadays also, which usually isn't that great. We get imports from BC, Cali, and Mexico, but I think it must be seconds or something because I've heard they grow good weed there, but the stuff they send here doesn't even come close to the Island grown weed. A lot of the imported stuff gets sold to tourists and unfortunately for the tourists it all costs the same and they don't know if it's Island grown or Mainland grown; I'm glad I'm not a tourist.

Here's a couple of links you can check out to see some good examples of growing pakalolo (Hawaiian for crazy weed, slang term) here:

This guy lives on the same island as me and writes the best grow journals ever. They're like epic sagas. He's funny, entertaining and he's a very accomplished grower.

And of course there's the Hawaii Growers thread on here (RIU). A lot of the regulars there are great outdoor growers and a couple of them, like East Hawaii, grow monsters.

I've really been enjoying the info exchange, thanks alot.

On a side note; Dylan, you got anymore updates?

Hey every one, i'm near the end of my first ever grow. I started with 6 seeds i got from a friend- 4 males and 2 females one some kind of Indica i'm assuming and the other a Sativa i think. i will put some pics up soon :) both plants are in my back yard one in the ground and one in a pot. mainly feeding with seaweed tea and worm juice. topped both once and then just tied them down to keep them low. I cut the males out and made blender hash from them. Is it too late to use colloidal silver to try and make fem seeds?
