Yes that's pretty much possible and done daily, sensi e.g. registered / trademarked their stuff (like Northern Lights® e.g.), but they didn't ever infringed someone as far as I know..real breeding in the sense of selecting, crossing, backcrossing whatever is complicated and there are a lot of "breeders" just taking strains and crossing them with each other.
Others try to infuse landrace genetics from seeds they obtained all over the world, but mostly everything is some kind of recombination of the most basic lines in cannabis:
Northern Lights, Haze, Skunk.
This simple "pollen chucking" needn't even be bad, take the caramelo e.g., it is a cross of 2 exceptional phenotypes of lavender from soma seeds, which is known to have quite a few different expressions of plants.
You can say someone saved you a little selecting, if you want. If you like the selected end result caramelo that is, of course.

what happened to Thai/Afghan/Columbian... Skunk/Northern Lights/Haze has been stable strains but landrace Indica/Sativa's are where they came from!

Some people don't want to buy a pack of seed with completely identical plants. I enjoy making my own selections and tossing the rest.

Yes I think thats great, too! e.g. if someone selects for high yield or high potency that needn't be necessarily your thing.
Maybe you like a less yielding plant more, because it has such a unique taste e.g...or you prefer a special euphoric high which is more mellow.
As I said somewhere else, we had a unique jamaican plant from the hotel's housekeeper back then. He is breeding since 30 years, I guess in a way like...oh tastes nice, oh thats strong..together they go! ..but who knows which lab he ran
It was simply the best..great clear, strong, sativa high, great taste, nothing compared to all those strong but vague highs you find in many commercial strains.
I believe if you look at all those polyhybrids chances are that something special emerges, but mostly its all just watering down some specific and unique cannabinoid / terpene profiles.

Best I've ever smoked came from skunk bagseed grown in NC back in 86-88. Haven't had a skunk plant since that even resembles the dead rotten skunk smell those girls produced.

New skunks I've tried are sweet tasting/harder buds/smaller buds/Mostly body buzz(medical)>
Old skunk was fluffy with huge buds/tasted pure skunk/Intense head buzz and 2 hr. later your sleepy

Cannabis only exists as 3 species we all know them. Ruder, Sats and indi. Anything else does not officialy exist mostly because cannabis legality.

The last major scale breeding like that was done in 00s by Ed on skunk#1.
Anyone else uses clones or seed from others.

Greece does alot of open farming and a majoriy of it is wank, granted a nice amount of it is supperb.


But if you look into rights and stuff when it comes to patents etc Cannabis is not aloud, well unless you modify it with other chemichals... See Sativex and the loops they climbed.

Easy, you got it all wrong . Of course 3 species, that's the absolute essentials, which I thought everyone knew..but 3 "basic lines" or better "building blocks" of modern breeding:
NL, Skunk, Haze.
Nothing wrong with that.
Northern Lights e.g. is a registered trademarked of Sensi, no bullshit, Sensi doesn't seem to care, but those NAMES are still registered trademarks.

million dollar question. u just have to pick thru tons and tons of breeders... make a final decision or two. then grow all of those out and select what u decide is closest to what u wanted in the first place. its so hard to say what is REAL skunk or not. the skunkiest stuff ive had was around 2001, just some commercially packed street weed. call it regs if u want, but the quality was amazing, and the high was much different than most even at that time. since then the absolute strongest, and most skunk like strains to me have been OGK and Nirvana's Venus Flytrap. neither of those have any claim to the old skunk genes either. so its a hard call. most people say sensi's skunk #1 thats available these days is no where close to the original. i honestly couldnt say, but going simply off what is known about breeders and such i would think theirs would be most likely to be original.
whos to say that dutch passion or any other breeder's isnt really from skunk#1 tho, so its a tough call IMO.

honestly there are a ton of gems out there. a lot more now than EVER before. there are just TONS and TONS more seeds, and different phenotypes of strains. so honestly its harder than ever to say just ONE strain in particular is a keeper, or the "best of the bunch"

if the people who screw up genetics would have backed off thru all of this over the past 10-15 years, we perhaps wouldnt have nearly as many strains today. but we also would have gotten farther, deeper really, into the strains that DID exist already. finding THOSE gems and choosing to breed strictly with those. just imagine how far deep into the pool of those major strain we would be by now. instead only a select few have partially done that over time. now a days uve got people so desperate to make $$ that they just pick from what they have instead of doing the work of true selection. some even just straight up lie about it, especially in the USA imo. and it seems to be happening in europe right now as well. i wonder how much real breeding work has been done in some of these "chem" strains that are popping up all over. Cheese is another that wasnt really treated properly by most. hope im not getting too off track. there are some VERY important breeders in europe too. i really wish i knew some folks in spain, that is gonna be the next mecca of cannabis imo.

There is a guy out there named Sam the Skunk Man. Guess what he helped develop. Search him out online. He is very approachable. Also he still makes seed strains. He can hook you up. He has a lot of unfinished Sk#1 X O.Haze crosses that make for good additions to any grow. I love his stuff. Been working with it for about 7 years now. Also I have my doubts about "Neville" being the real one since he misspelled his name. Any of the three guys that were working on Haze back in the 60s and 70s, will talk to you if you message them. But don't mention the other two cause there is some bad blood between them. Good Luck.

my two cents on that two year old debate is that the grow in my signature included sage, and it smelled exactly like a sage plant, like the plant sage instead of cannabis. That started about three weeks into veg. never smelled anything like that

That is how I started to feel, now I am popping tons of seeds and doing selections for plants that have desired characteristics. Then I won't be buying 1k worth of seeds a year.
