Topping Outdoors Under Different Circumstances

I've read several threads on here dealing with topping outdoor plants. Most seem to want to top to maintain a managable size or to prevent the plant from becoming visible over the top of a fence. These are not my concerns.

I've also read that topping increases yield, but this is almost always referring to an indoor setup.

I'm outdoors in the ground. Would it benefit me to merely support my plant in its natural growth or to top it occasionally?
Looking for a bigger yield. I've seen photos of huge spherical plants and wonder what it is they do to achieve this.

Thanks for the help!

for me i use a method ive seen on youtube (too damm stoned to remember and give credit where its due, for that whoever u are i sincerely apologize) anyway, i top the main shoot just a cunt above the second node, that will give u 4 main colas, and a more discreet plant, i do this topping when its in its 5,or 6 th node before i pinch of that tip at the second node because, it gives the plant a better chance of sucess. fuck hope this doesnt confuse u. thieves are looking for that christmas tree look, this will keep u under the radar. good luck bro peace out ol hippy Shotgun credit goes to unkl bens techniks (shit man im a bad speller)

Sounds like uncle bens topping technique for four main colas. I used it outdoors with good results. You definitely want to support the plant during flower though.
