How do you mark or tag your plants

I've been growing all sorts of plants for decades and still haven't found a 100% satisfactory way to label clones or seedlings when I want to track their genetics. I buy those plastic stake thingies but I can't figure out how the hell you're supposed to write on that slick white plastic. Even if I can make some kind of mark, it gets washed off by a stray drop of water. I tried using PostIt notes, epic fail. There must be some better way. Mainly I want to be able to label mother plants and the clones I take from them.

Yep, sharpie. the plastic stakes are good. when i am out of plastic stakes i have a stash of little white plastic dixie cups. cut them into 6 pieces, it works.

Go to the dollar store/walmart etc and pick up a bag of cheapo plastic poker chips. Whereever you keep you nutrients have a sheet of paper with

Red= NL#5
White = G13 Haze
Blue= Black Widow

etc etc and then just toss one chip of the appropriate color in the top of each clone of that line and never worry about writting on plants or sticks or mixxing em up again.

~edit

I have about 9 colors of chips and if you go over you then slice a qaurter of the chip out and mark it, etc you can keep track of TONs of genetics this way

I use the white plastic thingy

Thought about using different colored zip ties and make a chart that tells what each color is.

I guess I need a better type of marker. Mine always seem to smear till you can't tell what you wrote.

Sharpies should work. I use the white things and I mark the cup or pot so I have two labels.

many great methods...I usually label the pot using a piece of paper cut to fit and scotch tape over it so it wont fade or run...nice and easy. You can also tag a branch so its a lil easier to read if you're sea of greening those bitches. Just use the same method by writing the label on a small piece of paper and scotch taping over it. Then you can simply attach to any branch using fishing line.

I color code the pots:
White duct tape colored with colored sharpie...

I also use white tape/duct & masking for notes, [dates that are 'special' to me for that plant]
Clone date...date of 12/12 switch... date of hairs/buds... etc...

Sharpie, not the cheapos, and if you still have a problem, it may be from oil from your skin on it if you're handling the stake before trying to write on it.
Once you label it, you can even cover it with clear packing tape.
Kinda like laminating it.
