That's alot of rats, are these old school traps still the most efficient way? I don't know much about the business but it seems like someone would have come up with a "super trap" by now.
Umm super trap??? no not yet... but I do like the black snap traps better than the wooden ones. much easier to set, just push the back down and it clicks in place and it's set.
and most efficient? no only kills one at a time...

i got mice/rats in my feed room in my barn, i use rat/mice bait, but still they get into my feed bin. whats the best rat poison you recommend? i do keep a barn cat around but its not killing them all.
I really don't like store bought rodenticides especially for rats... the thing with rats is they are neophobic (the don't like new things and stick with what they trust) when setting out bait rats will take an eventual liking to them, the problem? they grow an immunity to the bait and eventually eat the bait like a snack.
rats unlike mice need liquid more often (mice can go several weeks without water) so if you can find a really strong liquid bait that would be best. (don't know any store bought stuff)
You need to be very careful with your cat and bait. I have lost 2 cats (one just a few weeks ago) to rat/mouse poison. (stupid neighbors, come talk to me I'll hook you up for free... fuckers)

your best bet... stick with snap traps baited with peanut butter right along wall lines. if they are tired of the grain the will flock to the peanut butter.
Mice are much more curios than rats and are more likely to get caught at first.
Altough cruel, glue board work well for mice, not so well for rats. do not bait the glue boards as the grease will spread through the glue board rendering it ineffective.

Remember pest like humans need 3 things to survive
water
food
shelter
eleminate one of these 3 and watch the population decrease.

I hope this helps... please let me know if you have any other questions

Glad I'm not the only one that deals with stuff like that all day.

Nice job on taking care of the rats.
and thank you for keeping our roads clean. I'm sure you see some pretty gnarley shit... I've seen a lot of mangeled dogs(??) on the road as of late.
If your dog rides in the back of your truck protect it!!!!

I think WW posted this on another thread but it seems appropriate for your post

Ok so I was going to post this in the Random Jibber Jabber Thread (sorry trolling you can still link it up if you want to) but I felt the need to add the disclaimer.
I don't expect this thread to take off but here it goes

so I'm a Pest Control Technician... haha who am I kidding I'm an exterminator it just sounds cool.
I got an emergency service call for one of my accounts... they have a huge rat infestation that just exploded the other day. So I went out and put a mass trapping program in place. I caught 3 rats yesterday 1 within 5 min. of setting my traps. I went back this morning to check on them... bam 9 caught!!!
i found 6 at first then #7 popped while I was there and eventually found #8 and 9
any way here are the first 6 I found and the rest of the family in a bag. Sorry for the blurry pic of #7

So how well does an exterminator gig pay? What sorts of qualifications would you need for that job? I've never really thought about it...

I'm currently watching an old First 48 episode and it showed some gang bangers brains and blood all over the street, the dead rat is a pleasant sight compared to that. The only good rat is a dead one.

Hey Pad sorry it took so long to respond to your question... didn't even see them
How well it pays depends on a few factors. I just started and might make 40k this year... not a whole lot but it's a start. The money starts to come in when you start generating sales, but you need a license for that. some of the guys i'm working with are making 100k easily between production and sales.

what do you need to get started??? nothing but the will to work.
I did things a little backwards. what normally happens is you start, get training for about a month, and then they send you to go and get your applicators license. This license allows you to handle insecticides, rodenticides etc... then you are allowed to go on your own and spray and bait.
I on the other hand got my license first, then got the job, then got my "training".
I put training in quotes cause it really wasn't much of a training for me it was like 2 days running with the boss and then thrown to the rats!!!

Well I've been doing this for 5 months now and they have been talking about promoting me since the 2nd month. I've been making waves getting major kudos from my clients and the higher ups.
I'm currently working on getting my branch 2 license wich will enable me to start selling. So at that point with new license and the promotion I should start seeing some good cash.
I'll pass off a lot of route work to my guys and spend 1/2 my time supervising/running route and the other half generating sales.

It's not a bad racket. I work the hours that I want the days that I want, so long as my route is done at the end of the month, it's all good.

by the way I've been super spoiled... normally you run residential first then commercial (which is where it's at)
I started with commercial and pretty much refuse to do any residential

I don't like those black traps ... watch the mice run up, sniff, and run away. I'm going back to the good old spring traps, with peanut butter or raw burger. Those traps never lasted more than 10 minutes, not a single hit on the black traps, though.

Yeah... Not so much for me. I watched a mouse walk up to it, sniff at the trap, walk around it and then run away. It was baited with peanut butter... We had a deal, a truce... They broke it. Oh, and they won't eat the bait blocks, either. little bastards.

you know that is really really odd... I could understand that with rats because they are neophobic (they don't like new things)... but mice are much more curious and love to explore new shit.
maybe they were baby rats???
I also love the bait blocks maybe it was the type that you used. Too much wax maybe

I'm guessing that's what the deal is with the bait blocks, pest control guy was a real cunt, definitely did NOT reflect kindly upon the profession ... They are definitely mice, I've killed 4 of them, there were 2 left when I switched to the black traps, and, there are STILL two left.
