germinating

Hello all. I have been germinating top shelf seeds and they keep dying once I put them in dirt. I never had this problem with mid grade seeds. I finally got two to sprout, OG KUSH, and unknown. It took me 25 seeds just to get those healthy two. Every time I put the germinated seed in the dirt it turns brown and never comes up. BTW these are bag seeds not store bought.

First I put in paper towel wet and store in dark cool place for 48 hours
next I put them in half gallon container and wet the soil with spray bottle
finally they are dead WTF!!??

Dont just spray the soil. Get it wet thoughout the hole soil...
I usually work from clones but wen i do seed i put mine into drenched jiffy pellets wen they have popped never had an issue.

When you take the seeds out of the paper towel, is the tap root exposed? How long is it? They should be put in soil as soon as they crack, dont let the tap root emerge and grow in the paper towel.

How deep are you planting them? They should only be about 1/4" deep.

Is the soil of good quality? A half gallon is big, you might try 16oz solo cups with drain holes punched in the bottom.

The soil should be moist all the way through. Then you can mist the top as needed.

If the seeds are opening up before you put them in the soil, then its something you are doing when you plant them. A germinated seed will grow if the conditions are even OK.

When you say "dead", what do you mean? Are they popping the surface? How long are you waiting to see the sprout emerge?

Let the seedlings come completely out of the shell while germinating the paper towel method.........then CAREFULLY bury the seedlings to just below the cotyledons....i usually poke a hole with my finger and bury it in there.Make sure you have moist soil when transplanting....keep your soil moist for a couple days and you should be good, then water as needed...i keep my lights on 12/12.GL.peace

I just fill my cup with soil, push the seed down a quarter inch or so, push soil over the hole, and water gently so as not to disturb the soil with a syringe I got from the farm supply place, and they come up within 5 days.

Yes when I remove the seed from paper towel and sandwich bag the tap root is exposed. One I had was half inch and some are less than qtr all died.
I am putting in qtr inch deep. Scotts hyponex not miracle grow. I will try solo cups. The most recent was og kush and it just broke the shell when I planted. When I say dead I mean I have to dig around only to find a brown tap root and it never tops the soil.

Thanks for all the help... I use my finger tip to poke hole and like I was saying I had no problems with mid grade seeds this just started happening with top shelf or high quality strains. I also grow all my plants 12/12 from seed but when I transplant from paper towel to soil I let it sit 24 hours in a dark cool area

I used to start my plants in a cup but I didn't like to disturb my plant so I wanted to cut out the middle man and go from paper towel straight to permanent container but I guess I will have to resort back to old method.

i have used a lot of diff ways

in water till about 1/8th inch tap

in paper towel after a one day soak
i went to a two day soak an was taken seeds out that was split an growin taps, when i did not check onem

i have used cd casses sandwitched in paper towels id still soak lots water lay on side in plastic bag
next day pour off stand up on side so gravity makes tap grow straight - if left on side will grow in circle
whut i liked about this the most is i planted seedlings about 2 inches long - no blind spot ,the under the dirt time - mistery time is it cuming up or not

the standard paper towel thingy soak first for a day

an the straight to the dirt till up- double mistery time - even longer , one must have patients

an it always help to use a heating pad - i use a lot of addatives but it works with or without

I just checked my recent seed of OG and the tap root has grown longer. Thank goodness, maybe some of the seeds werent healthy enough? I have three pots and the third was empty because of all the dead seeds I managed to plant. They all had healthy tap roots when I did though which is strange. I probably wasn't using enough water. Here are the two that did sprout. I will show OG I just planted when it sprouts.

What I learned from killing seeds...

1) Tap root is important - paper towel method is great because you can see the root and verify it's a good seed. You are blind planting in soil.

2) Soil temp is important - use a heat pad or cfl a couple inches from the soil. Seedlings react well to warmer temps.

3) Moisture is important - use a clear plastic cup or humidity dome to keep the moisture locked into the soil.

4) Smaller is better - peat pots & dixie cups are great containers for your new sprouts. Big pots have colder soil temps and are harder to control moisture.

Good luck on the rest of your grow.

One more tip :)...when using paper towel method, you can just rip the paper towel with taproot connected so you don't damage the root...it will grow just fine.GL.
