I have asked the question here before but never got a clear answer about what mix some of you are using. I would like to mix my own but don't want to f&%k up ya know. Bi66er420 said

that means for every 3 quarts of soil, you should use 1 quart of perlite. that way your mix is 75% soil, and 25% perlite. you can find perlite at any walmart or home depot in the gardening department. you definitely want to add perlite, to allow better drainage and so oxygen can circulate in your soil mix.

I wouldn't let my worst enemy use hyponex though...that shit is horrible. Personally I use peat moss instead of soil....you can find that at home depot in the gardening department. I actually prefer a half and half mix of perlite and peat moss. My plants love it.

You said it for me........TY...........agreed, that hyponex is crap.....I also use a combo of the organic soils and composts from lowes to mix my own "supersoil".
Peezo, you can use Miracle Grow, organic or not.If the hyponex is what you got just add perlite/vermiculite like I said.Water with plain water.Don't use any nutrients for the first couple weeks and your good.

Ok now I understand. I thought hyponex had perlite in it. Anyways I wanted to mix my own soil and I don't use nutes until I see hairs.

Thanks a lot and spittn4cash is that really you on the toilet with a bong in your profile pic?

My next grow I will go organic and mix my own perlite thanks to all your help.

Not saying this is pefect but it seemed to be an okay mix for me. 20% generic, no nute potting soil. 25% perlite, non MG/nute. 25% vermiculite, 30% peat moss. i also threw in some worm casings. I am going to add in some lime as well for next grow to hopefully help with PH.

Good am........I don't know what you meant by "I don't use nutes until I see hairs".......you can use nutrients after the second set of five fingered leaves show......usually the 4th-5th node.Hairs don't appear until you switch your light schedule to 12/12 or when a plant is mature enough to flower. The Hyponex does have perlite in,just not enough for adequate drainage.

That Scott's Hyponex is probably worse than Miracle Gro. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/lab/msg1003535616441.html

Jiffy plugs and Rapid Roots aren't great for starting seeds either, although Rooters would be better. It is really best just to start straight in a quality mix: Sunshine Mix Original, Sunshine Advanced Mix #4, Fox Farm's Light Warrior, Happy Frog or straight coco coir. The reason Jiffy and Rapid Rooter plugs aren't ideal is because they don't give the tap root enough room. The container you start in should be at least 4 inches. Plastic solo cups are an ideal size, widely available and they are cheap, which is why they are popular.

Would not recommend paper towels. Too finicky and the potential for fatal stress early on by handling the seed is too great. Just fill up a cup with a quality mix, push your finger down in the center to about your first knuckle, throw the seed in and water thoroughly (not with a spray bottle).

A heat pad will improve germination speed and success rates. The only other thing I should add is that high humidity\a dome is not required for seedlings, just fresh cuttings. High humidity and warmth are perfect conditions for diseases caused by bad fungi (i.e. damping off).

IDK man, you can take a cheap, shitty potting soil and add perlite to it... but likely all you will end up with is a cheap, shitty potting soil that has more perlite in it.
Not down with the perlite mantra, and it seems to me some take it a little too far. Most of the quality potting mixes already contain plenty of perlite. Personally I prefer to add coco coir, if anything, as it is fully organic with a more favorable pH than sphagnum, better air to water ratio and CEC. You can find compressed bricks of coco coir at the pet store (among other places), it is used as a bedding material for certain small animals.

Coco coir is a somewhat newer material to horticulture. For those who don't know it is an industry by-product derived from the husk or outer layer of the coconut. Piles of coconut husks have been piling up in high production areas (like Sri Lanka) for hundreds of years, in various stages of decomposition. The fibers have long been used to make door mats, brushes, rope, even baskets. Not until the past decade has it's usage as a soil conditioner\potting soil base been taken advantage of.

Sphagnum peat moss has been around longer as a soil conditioner and this is the primary material found in most potting soils or soil-less mixes. This is also what Jiffy peat pucks are comprised of. Sphagnum itself has a pH around 4, quite low because it harbors a lot of reserve acidity. For this reason in particular the material typically comes limed. You'll see something like dolomite lime or oyster shell flour as in ingredient; which is to adjust pH as well as supply some Ca and\or Mg.

If you're going to mix your own with sphagnum as a base, you're definitely going to want to add some dolomite. Hardware stores may carry the large compressed bales of straight sphagnum peat moss. With this stuff you need to fluff it up or soak in/spray with water and a wetting agent, as it is usually ultra-dry. Dolomite or calcitic limestone should be added to this at a rate of 1.5 heaping tbsp per gallon. Now you'll have a sphagnum ready to work with, to which you can add your perlite 25% or whatever, coco coir if desired and some earthworm castings or high quality humus or compost. Funky perlite that contains synthetic salts\fertilizers is also sold, beware of that and make sure what you buy is unadulterated perlite.

1) Tap root is important - paper towel method is great because you can see the root and verify it's a good seed. You are blind planting in soil.
Take the seed between your thumb and fore-finger and roll it, don't be afraid to apply pressure even on the seam. If the seed crumbles or otherwise breaks it wasn't a good seed. Other than that, if a seed doesn't come up it is no big deal; the soil can be re-used (also one reason for using solo cups).

I hear a lot of people like the happy frog soil. Fox farm seems really expensive but I am just gonna go to home depot and get regular soil and mix perlite with it. I dont want to get too fancy.

Yeah personally, I'd rather not blow a week waiting for nothing to happen. Paper towel is easy and visible results mean you can move forward with confidence. We all have our personal preference and this works best for my purposes.

I would use Lowes/HD 2bags organic potting soil+ 1 bag organic compost&peat moss+ 1 bag black Kow cow manure/compost+1 bag of perlite and i usually add a 2lb bag of organic tomato food(jobe's)...this should cost less than $25 and fill 2 18 gallon totes...I only get yellowing the last 3 weeks

I grow 12/12fs and use 3ltr soda bottles for containers....you can fit a lot in a 2.5×5x8ft. closet:)

If the seed passes the test I described 95+% of the time it is also going to sprout as long as it is moist and warm enough. Preference is whatever, but I fail to see how starting directly in the medium is to "blow a week waiting for nothing to happen". Visible results happen after 48-72 hours once the seed has poked thru the surface. Patience is a virtue.

Some seeds started directly in a mix take a week or longer to sprout, it's never happened to me but after that long in between paper towels I doubt such a seed would be given the chance.
