My Grandfather was a teenager during prohibition in Newfoundland. Lucky for him, large ships from Europe would come into the harbor and he could go drink on the boats. One night after he had partaken quite a bit, he tried to smuggle four bottles of cognac on shore in his jacket. He crept up over one of the many goat paths leading to his house in the dark but sadly, he stumbled and lost all four bottles....My family lived in the same area of Newfoundland for many generations, When "pop" was 67 years old, he was out walking down too the water slipped on some moss and cut his knee on a broken bottle...as he retrieved the piece he saw it was from a broken bottle of cognac. The memories came flooding back. He spent the an hour searching around and found three intact bottles that had laid there in the cool moss for some fifty years. That night him and his sons shared in what remained of his youth."Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), U.S. President.
