First timer needing help (ebb & flow)

Hey all,

Been a lurker for quite some time & love all the advice. I've started my first grow about 4 days ago & am having some problems stemming from the transplant & the day that followed.

These were transplanted from soil to hydroton buckets (I know you're not supposed to change mediums but I didn't know what medium they would be in as this is the first time using the person I bought the clones from). They were dipped in Azamax (2oz into 5 gal bucket). I began feeding with Root66 & SugarDaddy (Technaflora) for the first day then added BC Boost, BC Grow & Thrive B-1 red. The second day I woke up to the temp in the room being ~90 degrees & RH at 10%. This was my first time having the light on steadily. So I opened the window & fixed my ventilation issue but the stress on the plants was pretty severe. They were in that heat for about 4 hours. Also after I fixed that issue I discovered that my ppm shot up to ~1200 & they were fed the entire 2nd & 3rd day on it. I woke up this morning to the tips yellowing so I changed the res completely.

As of today, I have BC Boost, BC Grow, MagiCal & SuperThrive at half strength in 40 gallons. pH is a steady 6.0, ppm 700-720, water temp at 60, humidity is around 30% during lights on, 16% lights off, temps are around 77-78 during lights on, 60 lights off. Getting fed 5x a day (every 4 hours) starting a half hour after lights on & ending 2.5 hours before lights off. The 1000w MH is about 5 feet above the pots. A wall mounted fan is on high about 7-8 feet away.

Are they going to recover? A couple of them look decent but most have black curled leaves. What can I do to help them at this point? Will the leaves heal themselves or do they need to be trimmed or anything? I already had one die on me after the 90 degree heat so I'm hoping for some help with my first attempt at growing. This is on another forum as well; I'm just trying to get as much advice as possible.

Thanks in advance.

The leaves will not heal. Once they turn brown or black just trim the bad part off. The new growth is going to be what ya want to look at. That looks like a cap ebb & gro. That is what I grow with. I would back off on the nuties a little more and let the little girls settle in. 700 ppm is a lot for them at this time. I only grow 15 plants at a time and I use 30 gal. in the res. I need to take care of my girls. Good luck I'm glad to help any time.
Also I water 30min. before lights come on for 15 min. and then every 8 hr. for 15min.
You will want to put a spacer under the pots once the roots get down to the bottom of the pot. The water will heat up and cause problems with the roots sitting in it. I put a 1" spacer under them just the pots not the controller bucket. Well that all I can think of. Once again good luck

They might or might not recover there's no way to know for sure. So just hang in there and wait. Right now the tendency is to panic and try to do a bunch of things. The best thing to do is usually little other than re-adjusting the basics. I'd lower the nutrients a bunch. I run 200 to 300 PPM at your size. I'd also turn down the light and keep them cool. If you have a T5 or CFL that would be better. Right now they're young with a damaged feeding system so you don't want to push them you want them to recover. Basically treat them like you'd treat clones and maybe add light foliar feeding in case they need support while their root systems heal.

Best of luck, I hope they recover, welcome to RIU,

Thanks for the responses. You're correct as my first response is to panic as I have been for the past two days. I added as much water to the res as I could to get the ppm down. It's full now with the ppm down to 550. I also raised the light reflector a little bit so it's just above 5 feet. I don't have the money to get a T5 yet otherwise I would. I trimmed off the crispy leaves (but not the entire leaf).

Is there anything else I can do? I have a digital reader for pH, ppm & water temp. I stay home all day & check it 4-5 times a day. The only thing I'll be adjusting is the pH to keep it around 5.8-6.0

Hay pardoner I.m sorry if I went overboard telling ya to change the way your running your system. I'm running my 3rd grow with this system and I've had to tweak the system to make it work better. I know it's hard to wait and not do anything especially if your home all day. I'm home I don't work if you have anything else ya need let me know. The people here are a great help and good people I hope you enjoy using this site as much as I do. Welcome and good luck.

An update. I have a large laundry room with a concrete floor that I've moved the entire op into. It's about 10 degrees cooler & the airflow is much better. Now the room temp is 73 with the hygrometer sitting on the top of one of my buckets. It was always 81-82 in that same spot in the other room plus I was feeling like the air was really stiff. I've also changed the res. Maintaining the pH at 5.8-6.0, ppm is 400-440. BC Boost, BC Grow & SuperThrive all the nutes I'm using for now. Little under 30 gal in the res.

Hopefully the babies will prefer these conditions. Thoughts/Suggestions?

I've learned to avoid SuperThrive in hydro. I added some to a batch of hydro nute and had a bacteria party. pH dropped below 4.0 before recovering. cn

Noted. I'll keep an eye on it. Right now the pH goes from 5.8 to 6.2 with each feeding (4x a day) and so I add a couple shots of pH down between each.

Edit: also, I've only added about an ounce of it into the 30 gal res.

The hydroton holds more water than you may think. If you watch the bucket fill it should take about 7 or 8 min. with no root ball to impede the flow of water so it will sit for 7 or 8 min. then drain. The clay balls will hold water if you pick up the bucket before it fills and again after it drains you will be able to feel the dif. You don't want to over water and more water isn't going to help you will add to the stress. You have moved to a better room and ya just have to wait.

if ur room is 90, ur res is close to that which =s bacteria. get ur room to potential conditions. start over,

Update.

Here's all 11 of them after a few days in their new room. I'm worried because though they're sprouting (except for 2 of them who look like they're on their death bed) the new leaves seem to have dark tips & I don't know what else I can do.

Temps are between 71-75 lights on & 60-65 lights off. I keep the windows open all the time for new air. I maintain the pH at 5.8-5.9 with ppm at 300. The wall fan is always going & I refill the humidifier every day. It's always around 25%.

Do they look alright or is this a lost cause? I'm wondering if because of the stress after transplanting if they're not going to bounce back. 2 of them already look like they're done for.

I think 2 and 9 are done. The others are in pretty bad shape but if ya have the time you can wait a week and see if they get better before just starting over. They will not grow as fast as normal so your time frame has to be open. Seeds cost to much and you already have time invested. You will also learn a lot about your plants. The one that really takes off is the serviver that ya want to get clones from. I guess I could have said wait an other week.

Well, it's been a week now and I'm only seeing new growth on one plant (last one pictured). I also got my sky high utility bill today so I think I'm ready to unplug the light for awhile. I ordered some seeds from the 'tude that should be here within a week that are going to be in soil. I also got a SunLeaves Pioneer Jr. that has 2 fluorescent bulbs for them to veg under, way cheaper than this 1000w MH. The guys at the grow store here told me I should grow a few into mothers then take clones.

What do you guys think? I have seeds inbound so should I just chalk this up to learning experience & trash the bunch?

Ya boss they are still having a hard time. There is new growth but your going to be as long to recover as if ya started new seeds. That sucks if ya didn't have more seeds coming I would let them go but with new seeds coming a fresh start would be the way to go. Sorry they didn't come back better. Good luck with the new seeds. Let me know any time I can help.
