fungas gnats in the dam bag of soil

So I figured out where the dam fungus gnats are coming from!
I keep a bin in the bsmt with my soil in and I open the last bag of happy frog and the fackers fly out so they must be finding their way into the grow room.
So I grab a garbage bag and seal it up with a hotshot strip. Gonna let the bastards bake in there for a week and see what happens. I cant be baking soil in the house in the middle of winter.

Store your soils in the cold during winter, bring them in and thaw them out as needed. I store all my soils except worm castings in my garage during winter. Helps with slowing decomp. Gnats almost never come in the actual soil from the company, they usually get infested at the grow shop or nursery that sells or stores it. I have experimented with killing gnat larva in soil, it is impossible to kill them with either heat or cold. I suppose if you could get your oven temp high enough you could but it's not worth the effort and stink. Dispose of soil that is infested. It's not that gnats harm plants, they are harmful to young seedlings, but they are more a nuisance than anything.

If you got "Fackers" in your soil, take it back and get a new bag, minus the "Fackers"!

Welcome to the Club .. I joined it as well then bailed out and went back to Coco Bales .. Seems like almost every soil brand gets infested somewhere down the lines of transport and storage if held long enough .. I have noticed Roots brand soils to be drier than before in hopes to avoid the issues they have had before with Fungus Gnats ..

I dont know of any other companies who have claimed fault and tried to amend other than Auroa Roots Organic ..

I keep the dirt in a bin outside the grow just incase but theses little bastards are pretty smart and found the the way into my pots.
It's sound advice to just toss the soil but I had hoped to salvage it by roasting the soil in a sealed bag with a hotshot pest strip. I assume it may make the soil toxic and not even kill em...lol

Thats the best advice. Keep it out in the cold. Where I live the lows are in the teens.

Ya, I put the hot shot in a garbage bag and sealed it up with the soil for 24 hrs and the dam things are still alive so out it goes. It's worth it to just toss it.

You can try letting the soil in the pots dry out and then spray 29% H2O2 on the soil, it will kill any larvae near the surface. Also sharp sand layered on top of soil 1" thick will control them, they say! lol, I had them and they we're a pain in the hole to get rid of. Actually never really did lol switched to hydro!. Now I have these little fruit fly like bugs infiltrating the room lol.
