Loft or Basement Smell Leak

Hey guys,

I'm going to set my tent soon. Thinking about the basement or loft. Obviously loft space is very private but temperature fluctuations are an issue.

I want to put it in the basement. But i am worried because there is a small access hole/ventillation grill at street level - leading directly under a sidewalk. You can't see into the basement but when walking past my house you can see the grill on the sidewalk. This is on a small winding street full of houses and is somewhere that police do walk past regularly. Coupled with this there are nosey neighbours opposite and to the right and left of me. So stealth is an issue here. I'm in a house with a gf and 2 kids. Can't afford to get busted 'cuz of smell or something silly.

I will be using a carbon filter/fan combo from Greens.

Do you think that I need to worry about the smell leaking onto the street through this ventIllation opening? I realise the carbon filter should do a good job but what if they are in full flower and I have the tent open to water them? Have I got a risk of the smell getting outside through the opening?

I'm using a 90x90x180cm tent with 600 watt and 9 sog plants in flower. 5 inch fan and filter.

i will really appreciate some advice.

I would do it then ask a friend to come by and take a walk around and see if they notice any smell outside. Also add an ona gel bucket outside your tent and I really doubt you will have a problem.

Thank you. In the event that i need to move the tent is it a time consuming job to dismantle? ONA gell is that good then?

If it's not too big, you can always cover this ventilation grill with a carbon filter from the inside.

I wouldn't fuck around with detection... heat is at least a private issue... detection is nothing to mess with... I personally would go with the option that has less detectability even if it means temperature fluctuations... can you not draw air from below the loft somehow so that the chamber is cooled with cooler air from below? I'd do somethin like that...

suck air in from the vent and no smell will leak out
extract your filtered air to another part of the house
this way you keep the noise inside, and also you can smell when the filter needs changing
carbon filters work very well to block all smell coming out the end of the ducting
but they do not remove all smell from the room, and they will not stop air getting out of
gaps unless your fan is very powerful and creates a very high negative pressure in the whole room

so it would be better to have a small 4-5 inch fan sucking air directly in from the vent as an active inlet
and using another larger fan to extract to another part of the house
this will be good for the plants too

Hey guys,

well my fan pulls 365m3 per hour and the tent is .8x.8x1.8 so 1.52m3? I can't afford another inline fan for the intake so I was just relying on passive intake. I was going to vent through the floor boards directly above the basement (not a clear 5 inch hole just through the gaps in the floor boards).

the other option is the loft. I have power supply. It's insulated as well. I can vent out down into the bathroom. It just gets very cold and very hot in there. But it's a lot safer 'cuz its hard to get to. Also basement has gas and electric meter so may have visit from utilities man someday...

They both have their pluses and minuses. One thing about loft though is that I would be paranoid about FLIR detection.

Btw I have an SMS fan controller with thermo as well as a green house heater with thermo.

They make a carbon filter that and cover that extracts pollen's, mold spores, small insects ect. I sure like the idea of pulling air from this source instead of exausting to the street. You don't wan't a trained dope dog in a cop cruiser keying on it and going ape shit, when they roll past.
Personally, because of the once a month issue of the utility guy in there I would choose an alternate spot.
Mabey the attic. Mabey just get a more suitable place. Remember that grow LOCATION is paramount in stealth growing.
I see so many Issues from your post that will inevedibly get you busted.
Can't tell you how many friends I've had over the years go down because they had a girlfriend, or girlfriend with children.
Growing mj is great fun. Having a girlfriend, also great fun. The two seldom mix well.
An angry child, or girlfriend spells disaster.
One friend in particulaur is doing 10 more years. had a thing going. Teen boy got pissed about not using the car. picked up phone called 911, out of the blue just did it. 5 years allready in 10 left. Another friend had a buddy, best in fact. Buddy had a girlfriend.
buddy in girlfriend had some pillow talk abou this friend's plants, 3 plants. A week later during a football game, too much beer was drunk.
Buddy and his girlfriend got in an argument, police was called. drunk girlfriend got scared about the cops.Threats where made and it was made into a domestic where both parties ended up in jail over-night.
She had never been to jail. She freeked and spilled the secret. This friend got 3 years in wyo state prison. for 3, 12 inch plants poped from bag seed, in his closet.
These are freedom killers friend. You really have to be confident about your whole scenerio. Location included. If in soil, how are you going to dispose of it. Grow trash is another issue. A good suggestion is to invest your $ in finding a out of town place to rent with a basement area or garage. fire places are nice to dispose of stuff. Next consider your current living arrangements. Is It really a smart Idea. This child is at risk of being removed, regardless who's grow it is. In most states its a felony to grow. It's also a felony to knowingly live where an illegal drug operation exists. YOU get caugh she loses the kid (forever) and goes to jail as well. Believe me when the D.A hits her up, She will become his star witness. Deals will be made for a chance to regain parental rights after her sentence is served. Think first then grow!!! No weed is worth this childs future. A legal state with a card is prefered,the child then grows up with this being not illeagal, not a secret to leverage you with later in teen years. Just your meds. or your rec smoke if in the right state. Bet where you live there is such a state nearby.

They are young. Not of an age to say anything, or even know what marjiuana is. No issues with GF, even if I fucked another girl she wouldn't blag I am 100% sure. No issues with that. i smoke in the house next to her, and i got my current desler from her brother. I already grow now, in a PC cabinet in the living room. I don't have timer so she turns it off and on lol. She doesn't smoke weed. Been with her for years, no issues her blabbing.

anyway I'm in the UK so don't have to worry about the DA or whatever. If I get busted then girl knows what to say as do I. Might do a bit of community service or just a warning. They won't jail me I'm too well spoken, smart dressed, and got a decent job, etc. All grow material will be in one place out of site and she will say she had no knowledge. As for Getting rid of waste. I have a garden. I will use that or get rid of waste safely in small doses in a forest or something. Will figure that out.

utilities don't come once month. Maybe once in several years. Just there is a chance that someone might wanna go down there, although they do give notice.

I think that loft is best place really. Just wondering about FLIR detection from 600-1000 watt light??

flir cannot see through walls it will read heat from windows and openings like dryer vents and stuff if loft is insulated it will not see heat inside where you disperse the heat is where the will get ya a roof vent with a 90 deg plus will get attention a dryer vent not so much.

Right ok. So if I vent the heat down back into the house they won't be able to detect it? I'd do the grow in the day as well 6am-6pm to be on the safe side. Even with a 1000 watt it wouldn't show up?

not so sure about this one, but i would think its better to run the lights at night if you are worried about helicopters
it seems to be quite rare for them to be flying around at night, they are noisy things and would be waking everyone up
they tend to do their random neighborhood flir drug searches during the day when the noise of helicopters is less likely to bother people
if you run your lights from 10 pm to 10 am, there are less choppers about lol

Get one of those whirlybird air extractors and mount it in the roof to help keep the temps down. Might save you some power too. Take the loft.

I thought that they couldn't detect the heat in the day when the sun is out? Thought it had to be at night?

How much does a 1000watt bulb heat a room by anyway? 2-3oC?

Oh shit. Just been up there and I didn't realise but the ceiling joists aren't insulated, just the floor joists... Plus the tent would actually be touching the ceiling joists....
