my mother is in her early seventies and has hust been told her neck has severe degenerative spondylosis which isn't gonna get any better and is in constant pain so she needs some better meds than the doc is giving her. Been growing for a while now and was after some advice on what strain would be good for how and the best way to take it as she doesn't smoke and has never smoked pot. Dont want to give her a whitey. Think she needs oramorph.
I'm a little younger than your mom but not by an order of magnitude. Spondylosis and spondylolithesis are things we expect to see if you are lucky enough to live long enough. First your mom needs to start with yoga (stretching, relaxation and mild cardio), and upping the protein in her diet. Pain drives you toward carbs and fats which continue the pain spiral.
As for the pot you maybe surprised about your mom's past LOL! So just sit down with her and tell her you are concerned about her pain and you love her (that in itself will be WAY MORE than enough). Hearing compassion come from your children tells you they have finally become adults and makes you very proud of them and allows you to finally ratchet down some of the worry.
Then offer her help with getting a trial of cannabis for pain just for sleep. So start her off with pot at sleep. What you may or may not find is your mom has tried cannabis in the past. But remember the cannabis your mom and I used in the day was all racy/heady sativa. When you suggest cannabis for pain to someone who last used the racy sativas we think you're nuts. It's the same way we think about growing. Who wanted a 20 foot Sativa tree outside your door? But I digress.
If your mom used back in the day it was joints (without crutches LOL). So roll her a joint using about .3 grams (I started rolling them to small and didn't realize all that harshness was paper from to small a joint ha ha), so roll an appropriate size for her, put a crutch in it for her and give her a small glass pyrex bowl that will hold her joint, a lighter and her ashes and her snuffer. Have her take 2 puffs then place the joint in the snuffer and have her wait 15 minutes to test the effect.
Make sure her bedroom has a clear path to the bathroom and there's a night light. Pot can make us dizzy and certainly the by products of combustion can so you want to guarantee she doesn't fall and break a hip especially since she's doing this at night. Have her test this for a few weeks with 1 to 4 puffs. Also try to get her some Indica mid grade with decent cbd (this ameloriates the anxiety from the THC). But no Sativas (or Sativa dominant phenos)!
One thing you might want to do is have her take 25 mg of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) about 30 minutes before she first smokes. Then invest in a vaporizer if this works for her. I first tried this for pain around 10/2011 and I just graduated to vaporizing 2/16/2013. Only a few puffs every night or at first every few nights doesn't require a vaporizer. However if she shows any type of itch reaction you might want to move her to vaporizing to relieve that. I had a significant reaction in terms of itching (pruritis) and even so didn't need it enough to need to vaporize until the past month or two.
Anyway I hope some of this might help you.
