miracle grow

Just because I posted something from the internet doesn't mean I believe everything I see or read on the internet and you all must be fucking idiots to believe anything that has not been tested be safe in food is safe to put in a plant that is going to be smoked. I'm sorry but I grow medicine for people who need help and I don't believe its ok to give someone something that could potentially harm them because we don't fully understand whats in it and there is wetting agents that can possibly turn into carcinogens. So if you people want to keep on believing that miracle grow is good to use on your plants then go right ahead, but I am going to keep growing clean good medicine that wont harm my patients or myself.

never once called myself a doctor. I'm a caregiver and have a few patients the amount I'm allowed. Also I didn't call you an idiot I'm calling the person that's telling you its ok to use miracle grow an idiot and if you would use your head and listen to someone who knows what their doing then maybe you would get some where a lot further than your going to using that shitty miracle grow. By the way go look at my journal post and tell me I don't know what Im doing.

This is from another forum written by a research assistant for the usda, need I say more.Whats Wrong with Miracle Grow, AKA the Dangers of Miracle Grow

Posted by Administrator on April 7, 2010 Leave a commentGo to comments

I take soil seriously, and get downright obsessive about it. As a research assistant for the USDA, I spent four years mixing soil blends and know it really, really makes a difference. I smell soil, feel it, and sometimes taste it (yuck, I know). I wouldn’t grow a plant in anything that I wouldn’t be willing to taste. Having a degree in Chemistry gives me the inside scoop as to what is happening chemical wise, and sometimes its not nice.
Think about it, soil is the foundation of growing a plant. Plants need sun, water and nutrients, and those nutrients are in the soil. Those nutrients aren’t limited to just the big three, Potassium, Nitrogen and Phosphorus either. Those nutrients include iron, magnesium, calcium, zinc, you know, all the stuff we take in the vitamin pills to supplement our bodies with the stuff that is not fruit and vegetables anymore. Yes it’s true, we have less vitamins and minerals in our food than our grandparents did because of big factory farms and chemical fertilizers.
Occasionally someone will come and ask me if I have Miracle Grow products, I really don’t want to get all record store attitude with people but no, I don’t and there are many reasons why. In short, Miracle Grow is like wonder bread, yes it’s cheap, it fills you up but at the end of the day its not good for you, or the planet. I wouldn’t use it for house plants, or for the food I eat. Yes its cheap, but sometimes cheap is expensive, and here’s why.
Miracle-Gro and Hyponex are produced by the Scotts Company, a billion dollar chemical company that also produces fertilizer, bagged soil, pesticides, and hoses. Miracle-Gro Fertilizer is a chemical based, INorganic fertilizer, Miracle Grow soils contain peat and inorganic fertilizers (those yummy grow crystals). Scotts also makes Hyponex, the worst soil on earth, its made of construction waste and crap, its so bad that the Colorado State University released a warning, http://www.coopext.colostate.edu/4dmg/Plants/pottmix.htm and was a topic of a lengthy discussion on a popular gardening site (http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/contain/msg0520500510183.html) Who wants that?
These are soils that are sold at your local hardware stores and orange big box stores that call themselves “garden centers”.
It makes me sad to see this crap being used to grow food that our kids are eating and it makes me angry to see it being sold in local stores. They don’t care about you, your plants or the planet, they just want a cheap product that will make a buck.
Here is whats wrong with inorganic fertilizers.
SALTS
Using inorganic fertilizers over a long period of time will decrease the available nutrients in the soil, depleting it of the building blocks that plants need to make VITAMINES.
PESTICIDES
In 2008, the EPA ordered the Scotts company to recall two Miracle-Grow products because they contained trifuralin, a herbicide. This ingredient was not listed on the label. Herbicides are a commonly known carcinogen. Who knows what else is not listed, I don’t, its a trade secret.
ENVIRONMENT
Many of the ingredients in inorganic fertilizers do not come from sustainable resources. Coal and Gas are used to produce the nitrogen used in Miracle Grow. The excess salts that are not absorbed by the plants are washed into local water sources. These are the nutrients that responsible for excessive algae growth which create “dead zones” in our rivers, lakes and oceans (yes oceans).
Miracle Grow Soil is a peat based soil, peat is a non-renewable resource. Hyponex Soil is made from construction waste and sewage debris, not something I would taste.
OTHER INGREDIENTS
Miracle Grow potting soil contains OTHER INGREDIENTS, these include plastics, wetting agents and peat, a non sustainable resource. These ingredients have not been tested or proven to be safe for use with FOOD!!!!!> Most wetting agents are detergents and many are known carcinogens.
Miracle Grow does have an “organic” line of products, these also have wetting agents, peat, and who knows what else. In my opinion, who would want to support a billion dollar chemical company that is single handily responsible for polluting our environment and depleting the food we eat of nutrients, I don’t.
Anyhow, no, we don’t sell Miracle-Gro and we never will.
We do sell soil that is made with organic ingredients, worm droppings, leaves, compost, bird poop, all the stuff that makes for a list of THOUSANDS of available nutrients. All the stuff that makes plants grow better and food to taste better and all from renewable resources. All the soil we sell and use is made within 100 miles of our shop. We carry a few brands but Organic Mechanics is one of my favorites. I have met the dude who makes it, his name is Mark, and he is decent person, a person with a soul and a conscience. http://www.organicmechanicsoil.com/. That is a great foundation for healthy living.
Anyhow, enough with record store attitude, I have some growing to do.
thats full of inaccuracies and eco-lunacy.

miracle gro (and all commercial soils) are made from decomposed plant material, and fertilizers of various sorts. ill break it down for ya

Bulk Materials: miracle gro (and most other stuff you might find at wal-mart home depot or lowes) is not properly composted, so these products contain fairly large sticks, twigs bits of root, leaves, bark and other shit that plants dont really crave. these bits (mostly cellulose) produce acids, mostly tannins, as they break down over timeand most plants arent big fans of tannins. Peat Moss is another major component, and it too is full of tannins, and gradually releases these acids as the peat becomes Loam (the good stuff). as a soil product, the organic material in miracle gro is intended to be the stuff your plant holds onto to stay upright, and as a reservoir for water. the base materials are not intended to be the nutritive element in your soil product, thats added later.

every scrap of the bulk materials used in commercial potting mizes is the very definition of "renewable resources" since it comes from landscaping companies (lawn clippings) your municipal greenwaste collection programs, sawmill waste (bark and sawdust) and crop stubble from farms. the above screed's claim that peat moss is non-renewable is just retarded since it is MOSS and it grows quite rapidly. in bogs marshes and fens.

"Wetting Agents":
these are basically surfactants and silica gels and silicone. shit dope growers buy for their grows (Great White, Root Doctor and many others) they are included to speed the absorption of water and hold the water in the medium longer. thats all. they dont harm the plant, and are in fact not used by the plants at all. they dissipate over time and after a year or so, miracle grow soil becomes just plain ordinary dirt like any other, just without the clay, pebbles, animal feces (unless you add it yourself) and compacted materials.

"Chemical Fertilizers":
yep. thats in there. and the plants dont mind a bit. miracle gro "time release" fertilizers are a little too spicy at the first few weeks, and gradually become quite useful, but they are depleted entirely by the time you hit month 2 or so.
if you were to use a soill-less product like coco fiber, which has no nutrients, you would have to add the fertilizers yourself, and those fertilizers would come from the same place miracle gro fertilizers come from (unless you pay extra for the "Organic" stuff like Fox Farms) but in the end plants dont care where their food comes from, using the "Green" stuff is for your benefit, not your plants'

Herbicides, Pesticides etc... : this stuff is not added by the potting mix makers, it is a result of their sources for the Bulk Materials (golf courses use wild amounts of the stuff, and their lawn clippings are sold to composters) and it can sometimes be present in the incomplete compost materials used. any herbicide in the potting mix will be in VERY low concentrations and will dissipate rapidly. i've never seen a plant die from herbicide residue in potting mix, but i suppose it's possible. just unlikely.

anyone who is really worried about potting mixes can make their own soil from kitchen scraps, your own leaf and lawn waste and some earthworms. it just takes about a year to go from leaf to soil the old fashioned way and it can sometimes stink and draw vermin.

make your own choices, but dont believe bullshit.

you all can keep on going and believing its ok to use something that's never been properly tested but I'll keep growing good clean organic medicine as it was intended, I'm done with you people. Ignorance is bliss.

it can be grown on MG... but it shouldnt not ever. MG has a laundry list of issues when it comes to buds.. high PH, high nute leavles that will burn seedlings and cuttings. poor nute ratio for cannabis. bad soil drainage. the time release fertilizer in there is a joke. and to top off all that ! MG is ment to grow ornamental plants its not even veggies and def. def. not something im going to smoke.. you can use that stuff and grow decent bud but id say grab a bag of organic soil from home depot or whatever. just look for an all natural. should be the same cost as MG. sub cools super soil is the best deal out there and u should look into that shit yo!

that's some good info from both sides of the argument you know what I mean. Anyway I used MG on my first two grows and was quite happy with it. But hey they say ignorance is bliss and I kinda like it that way lol. I don't used MG now as someone here told me about pro-mix so I gave it a try. I personally found pro-mix to be better but that is my opinion. I also mix in some homemade compost and a few other things. As a first grow I think MG is fine as it does take out some of the guess work of nutrients. Hell I am high and probably not making much sense lol. Happy growing to you all.
