Sizing up pots?

Getting the materials together for my first outdoor grow... living in Nor-Cal, went to the hydro store today and talked to some people.. they all said that sizing up on pots isn't worth it.. and because i'm starting with healthy clones i might as well just drop them in my 30 gallon pots and let em sail.

What do you guys think?

i started a few years back with 10 gallon grow bags...now im using 65 and 100 smart pots...upping pot size is addictive as shit...i wish i had the funds to do 200 or 300 gallon plants...
can't believe a hydro shop wouldn't try and up sell.... last year i ran a few 18 gallon totes(for smaller plants) ...i liked them a lot..but this year im upgrading again(i have every year)...making my own smart pots...
chasing the dragon...
how big is too big?

also, norcal clone growers unite!

Aahhah I was SO CLOSE to buying 100gal totes... and then I thought about my neighbors and figured seeing a few beasts in my backyard would raise suspicion... well i mean... even with a 30 that's probably going to happen :)

I'm planning on picking up my clones from a club around here... you have any insight into them? I bought some Tahoe OG from Harborside last season and they were aight.... i've read mixed reviews about most clubs clones.

I consider 100gl pots to be minimum for outdoors. I'm like brownwater, I wish I had room for 200gl!lol!
And I grow clones outdoors. The main thing with clones outdoors is they are more lite sensitive & will want to flower when put outdoors. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not.
Good luck

Next season... might just have to think about 100gl. If I was in a different location with a little more privacy and more enthusiastic parents i would probably take it a few steps further.. but until then, 6 30's will be plenty :)

Because the clones are very light sensitive... which you recommend that I keep them in the shade when first transplanting the rockwell cubes into their new HUGE homes. Also - although the tote is huge... i wont need to heavily water them until the girl gets bigger, right?

How do you keep those clones from flowering as soon as you put them out ???

I'm serious.. My plants are all from clones. I veg them indoors til they are the size I want and as soon as I put them outside they flower. I would like to grow a "tree" someday and I think the only way I could do it is by gradually reducing my light cycle until it matches length of light they'll get outside.

Thinking about the size of pots you guys are referring to would be a total waste for me.. I'd be watering and feeding dirt.

You can use a Cfl light and turn it on for 10-30 minutes at different time at night and that prevents early flowering. Proven method

Thanx but I don't think sticking a light in my backyard that lights up everything in the middle of the night is a good idea for me..

I run a string of lights around my plants. It's enough to keep them from flowering. They only come on at 4:00am in the morning until dawn. Most people aren't up at 4:00am to see it. I like trees because they keep the plant numbers low.
Good luck

And you continue turning these lights on up until what month? A side question... the carport you use... what kind of sunblock percentage do you recommend? I'm looking around for a 10x10 enclosure and it's hard to find the specifics of how much light will penetrate. I have a limitless amount of questions for you... I just want to pick your brain for all its growing gold!

Much thanks

imo DHN clones are better than other nurseries....queen bee and medicinal organics are pretty good too....
dhn's jilly bean is awesome...as is queen bee's xj-13....

You're not the first person to tell me about DHN... thank you! I think i'm set on picking some of their clones up... gonna have to go peruse elemental and figure out what strain i'm feeling for this year.

DHN clones are very good , normally very health and disease& pest free. And as for pot size even in a 30 gal smart pot you can get some huge plants , a couple years ago I did some blue dream in 30's and got 2.5 lbs per , now I use 100 gal and I'll pull 2.5 even on a low yielding plant but I'll pull 6 off a chocolope

Do you think it would be a bad idea to put the clones straight into the 30gals? or should i drop them in some 5's and then move them up.

i put clones in solo cups first, then quart size pots, then 2 gallon pots...i would do 5 gallons if i had the room...

also i kill the sting work light in late june with the equinox...

Thank you for the information, after looking around on other threads/forums I found that essentially it isn't "BAD" to drop a clone right into a large pot, but the plants will grow faster if i transplant them from small to big... i'm just worried about the stress i will induce.

The reason is because the decrease in hours does this to the plants. When you put a clone that is on 18/6 or 24/0 outdoors into 13/11 or whatever it is now then it will most likely flower. That's why I started my seedlings outdoors last month, they're about to sex soon and once they do I'll put them in bigger pots to veg out. But as for my clones, I keep them on 18/6 after they've rooted. Once it's about time to put them outside I decrease the time from 18/6 down gradually to 15/9, this way when the plants are going outside the difference in light is only an hour or two and the plant will most likely veg to that instead of flowering due to a 4-6 hour decrease in light.

Where I live, outdoors doesn't show 14/10 until around May 20th so putting clones out around then is best, I'll probably start a week before then. And as we all know, daylight will continue to increase from May all the way until the solstice on June 21st, after that flowering should kick in. Last year I found all this out the hard way, I had my clones under 18/6 and threw them outside around this time last year. The sunlight around now is about 12 1/2 hours which means most plants will start to flower now, but will start to re-veg after a while because we're getting an increase of 2-3 minutes of light per day until the solstice. Even if they're going out around May 20th I still need to make my veg room's hours a 15/9 schedule because there's still the possibility the plant will flower due to the 4 hours of decreased light.

I keep them on 18/6 until the solstice in June, then let mother nature take it's course.
Good luck
