When flowering season comes, my wife & I go on opposite shifts. I sleep during the day & stay up all night, for the last 4-6 weeks.
I have a machette named "Taliban". So you'll find me & the Taliban, in the garden at night.

P.S. My wife uses 'driveway alarms' during her watch, they work good also. And she doesn't have to deal with the Taliban.

Use a wireless motion detector system that has a 300-1000 feet range and will SILENTLY send a signal to your receiver device to notify you if it detects motion in the area (but the intruder will not know!). I bought one of these (below) and tested it - works great! Beeps loud, and different beeps will give you an idea which one was tripped. Will be setting up this summer for my project. Get something similar. Put the receiver right by your head when you go to sleep. Also helps with deer and critters.

I am setting this system up on the perimeter of my area. Nobody can fuck with me this year!

EDIT - if the detector picks up too much vibration from moving branches and leaves, I recommend placing a piece of plywood in the path of the sensor (10-50 feet away) so that you don't get too many false beeps.

http://www.aartech.ca/rctd20u-optex-wireless-2000-driveway-entry-alert-kit.html

The Optex Wireless 2000 driveway and entry alert kit includes a weather resistant indoor/outdoor motion sensor transmitter and a wireless receiver with a built-in chime and relay output that can be used to trigger external devices like a bell. The receiver supports up to 9 transmitters on up to 3 separate zones with different tones for each zone, so you can add additional TD20U motion sensors in different areas and know exactly which one was triggered. You can use multiple RC20U receivers to provide an alert from another location(s). With no wires to run, installation is easy and only takes minutes. Range is up to 2000 feet (clear line of sight).

Never miss someone at the front door again
Use as a driveway alarm, door alert at home or busisness or back yard monitor
Expandable: Add additional receivers or transmitters
No wires to run!

This is a great kit for home or business and is good for detecting people or vehicles moving past the sensor path. The sensor detection area can be set for "fan pattern" or "long range pattern" depending on the application. The motion detector operates on a 9V battery which will last up to 2 years. The receiver is powered by the included 9VDC power adapter.

My attorney advised me I could be sued for placing these outside of my first floor windows should they be stepped on, so use at your own risk so to speak.

I really thought about putting up bear traps and other smart things to hurt trespassers, but in the end I realized that its just a terrible idea. Why bring the cops/medics right to your crop? If anything, things should be as inconspicuous as possible. That includes avoiding setting up things that may cause suspicion or attract attention. For example, putting up a fence. Putting up surveillance cameras around your property that people will notice (and obviously suspect something). Even such small things as tent setup will draw suspicion from people looking for these crops.

Its best to just plant it smartly and then watch your crop, don't act suspicious, set up warning system and you MUST be prepared for ANY situation. You must assess all scenarios and assume that cops may show up and you need to have a back up plan. If you're not this well prepared, it may have disastrous consequences.

Any force used to defend your crops / land is a huge legal no no. You can not cause harm over crops / land. Only inside your house. And if you grow, the police and justice system is going to come down on you like a ton of bricks. Saying the own reason you killed / hurt some one is because you are growing illegal / selling on the market. The only thing you should do is use camera as a deterrent and play dead. This is not some thing to be ignored at all. You will go to prison over causing harm.

I would say that anyone that advances on me with my machette, & I'd be defending myself, not a marijuana plant. That fucker would coming after me! & I have every right to defend myself from advancing criminals, in my backyard in the middle of the night. I'll take my chances with the Taliban.
And yes my dog Molly, saved my crop a few years ago, by chasing off a thief.
Molly - 1
Thief - 0

DoubleJJ beat me to it. By Cali stat law if you feel your life(or a third party's life) is in danger you are legally allowed to use lethal force. If I happen to be in my backyard taking a piss while the thief........I mean "attacker" comes rushing in my yard........I can kill his ass. No doubt about it, I would win in court. California State Law. The courts can't argue with facts.
