Native soil experts and expireince

Hey guys, I finally got out today on one of my favorite plots and got to fill my
holes up. To my suprise I used much much more soil than I expected to use.
Last year I dug 2ft wide and 1ft to 2ft deep and this year I dug 3ft wide and 3ft
deep and while I was digging the holes earlier in the year I hauled all excess
soil over a bluff in buckets. I did however keep the top few inches of the soil to
mix with my amended soil. My soil mix was fafard, (much finer and better quality than promix in my expirience but very similar), mushroom compost, vegetable compost, worm compost, lime, perlite and alot of polymer crystals.

I ran out of soil halfway through fillin my holes and I was pissed. I still have enough soil left over to finish this plot. But I have a few more plots also that I just cant afford to put that much money into. Does anyone have any expirience on ammending native soil? I was thinking, perlite, worm compost, my own homemade compost from bin, cow manure and lime? Also maybe scraping the top layers of soil throughout the forest and throwing in bags and mixing in as well, like the top soil, leaves, etc. Does this sound okay? And by doing this will it affect my usual yield? Pretty much i'll be using everything except the soiless mix cause thats what costs out the ass.

Another question, how much dolomite lime (looks like small gravel chunks I got from the farm supply store) should I use per 3ft by 3ft hole? Ive been using about a small handfull. And how much perlite? I bought severl bags of miracle grow perlite and it seems to work well. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this and help me in advance!

the lime I use is powdery instead of chunky so I hate to advise u on an amt to use when I'm not familiar with it. When I use lime I generally just cover the soil evenly in a thin layer and mix. The handful per hole u described sounds about right.
Don't include a whole lotta leaf in your mix lots of bugs live in the leaf bed on the forest floor and will end up on ur girls if carried to em.
other than that wat ur planning on doing sounds food. Just mix it as thoroughly as u can so the roots can grow freely.

Thanks guys for the help. I went back to my plot today and done some more work. I've actually extended the holes about 2 extra feet in diameter. So theyre about 5 ft wide now. But about a foot deep. Kinda come up with a cool idea if I can explain this and make sense of it lol. I dug my holes about 3ft deep by 3 ft wide. Now every week or so until I put my girls out i'm going to throw some compost, perlite, castings, and ammendments about a foot wider around the original circle of the hole. Then dig down about a ft and till it in along with some polymers to make a good water retaining mix. I'm gonna do this until I reach about a 6ft or more in width circular hole. Its much easier than doing it all at once. I figure if the original hole is 3 ft deep by three ft wide, thats plenty of room for the tap root and main roots then digging a ft or so deep around the hole and spreading out a few more feet with ammendments will allow the upper roots to spread alot more allowing a larger plant. Hell I might even end up running a test on this idea, by doing one about ten ft in diameter lol. Its much easier and it seems like it would be a huge bonus, dont see what it could hurt. What do you guys think?

Yeah I kinda thought about that also. Some plots I can get away with it, others I wouldnt even try. I'm just
sick of getting an oz or 2 per plant when i'm seeing people at LEAST get a qp or 1/2 per plant.

thats understandable, if it were up to me id make the hole say 4x4 or 5x3 or something because then you can have the root space but not as big of a disturbed area on top,

plus idk if i was a root i would probably rather grow in a hole thats deeper nd wider instead of 3x3 then anouther 2 feet by only 1 foot deep area

you dnt need to do all that, to get over 2 oz. with good soil that has adequate drainge, and you provide your plant the nutrients they need, a 1/2 minimum, with the original sized hole(3x3) and could easily achieve a lb per

Like a previous poster said if you provide ur girls with enuff water/nutes a 3x3 would definitely get u a 1/2 to a whole Lbow. But another factor that took me from ounces to lbs was finding a spot where they got sun for the entire day minus about a half hour when it finally gets behind some trees that can't be messed with.

But you do those three things right:hole/water/picking a well lit spot, and you'll b feeling rewarded for it come fall.

And about ur wide hole I know from experience that it does make a difference so if u can do it w/o it being a security issue then definitely do!

i got a couple of pics in one of my journals holding branches in each hand of a plant grown in a spot that was super shallow but wide.
