why do timers break so easily?

I always have the same problem! I think its the room I use, we get alot of paranormal activity in our house! Not that anyone believes in that, I set timers on my phone and always make sure its at times to suit me best! The only one that ever lasted is one for my fan that I hang.

the amount of wattage we use?
I would guess the amps more than the wattage. But the answer to your first question is because you buy too cheap.

I buy cheap outdoor timers for indoor use, a little more sturdy and splash proof.

ya i'm guessing a lot of things can come in effect I have 2 timers im using that i've used for different things over the past year than finally used them both on my last grow that worked great well at the end of my flowering stage of my last grow i switched one out for a timer i got with my 400w mh since it could be programmed to work every 15mins on/off ... and it died the first week of my new grow.. but like Sativied said the outdoor timers usually work great and one of the ones i still use is made for outdoor use.

I agree about the cheap ones. just spend a little extra cash and get a decent one. also don't over load them cause it very easy to. i like mechanical timers over most digital ones simply because they are not as complicated.

Home Depot, $19.95 digital, set once and forget. Built in battery for time and programs in case of power loss. Good investment, lasts.

it is the surge a ballast uses when it first ignites and charges the internal cap. it burns the contact on a regular timer - so you either need a beefed up contact or a switch that the timer activates that in turn activates the contact so it isn't direct. That's why it's best to use a relay or an adapted timer - regular ones just aren't up to it for lights - for everything else they're fine...
