What exactly are these bugs doing to your plants? Can you even give a general description? Do they fly? Are they in the soil? on the leaves? What if they are harmless?

There is a big difference in treating fungus gnats vs treating root aphids vs "treating" spring tails.

I had posted another thread a couple days ago and assumed that some of the regulars would have remembered it, plus I really don't know how to identify them. They are little flying bastards, they extremely tiny, they are black as far as I can see, they came in MG organic choice soil (the bag had like vent holes in the top at regular intervals which I thought was retarded) as far as damage done to my plants the first true leaves have died, my plants other leaves have browning from the line in the middle of the leaf (sorry I don't know the technical term for that) I see these little fuckers crawling fast across the soil and they fly. I hope this helps as I can not take a picture of them because of their size.

Cover your soil with something like garden sand or hydroton, and if possible water from the bottom of the plant. The little fuckers need wet.

I had a similar problem, i bought some stuff from Home Depot that would make the bugs go away for a week but they always come back! so I asked the grow expert at my local grow store(who I trust) and he asked me if I wanted to deal with these pests or get rid of them for good, so he sold me a product called "MALLET® 2F T&O"... now it is a commercial insecticide used in the tree/turf industry including edible trees such as oranges and crazy dangerous but doesn't affect or get into the plant. It is expensive $100ish and the smallest size is enough to last a life time cuz you only put 5ml in a gallon. Remember what ever you use, you must reapply 3 days later to kill all the bugs that hatch... this is no organic solution but it will ALWAYS work

those are fungus gnats. they are NOT killing your plant, they are reproducing in the haven you have made for them when YOU are killing your plant.

fungus gnats are a sure sign you are overwatering. they are pesky and irritating but they do not eat your plant, they eat the fungus that grows in your soil when you over-water.

the solution is simple:

WATER LESS and your plant may survive, and the gnats will disappear, keep overwatering and the gnats will persist long after your plant has turned to a dead stick in the mud

Mallet is for root aphids, root gall nematodes, burrowing root destroying insects and whiteflies, not fungus gnats!

fungus gnats have ZERO interest in your plant, they only eat the fungus that grows when you over-water.

using Mallet on fungus gnats is like beating your dog with a baseball bat because the cat clawed up the sofa.

the eggs of fungus gnats will not hatch unless there is sufficient moisture for them to grow, the larvae will starve if there is insufficient fungus for them to eat, and if the larvae cannot survive, the gnats will never be seen flying around, fucking and laying more eggs.

just a couple microscopic eggs can result in a swarm of gnats if you feed them and keep them moist long enough for them to reproduce.

even soil stored inside in airtight sacks under 0% humidity can host a fungus gnat infestation just days after you start overwatering.

where the first eggs come from is irrelevant, since they can fly in from outside travel on your clothing, or ride on the back of your dog to get to your soil. if you make a suitable home for them, fungus gnats will move in.

but do feel free to blame the soil. im sure the blame will eradicate the infestation and protect your plants from overwatering... somehow.
