I'd hopefully reprogram the logic that you're operating by which is quite flawed in terms of pediatric psychiatry and how it relates to molding children into productive members of society who would be less likely to act out, be a statistic, or deviate from what many would call a norm.

A) you beating your son B) public C) I felt it wasn't justified = D) your ass kicked .. the result would be the same if you beat your child for shits and giggles, or if they did something and I felt you over-reacted in public. the answer would be: D)

Agreed, spanking is understood, and there are times for that - beating in any fashion is a good way to get one in kind from someone with a no bs stance on abuse.
