Is Facebook Dangerous?

I'm becoming more and more leery about FB and the fact that it puts you out in the cyber world so easily. Some breeders have FB pages that I selected "Like" to be subscribed to their updates. I've been seriously contemplating deleting FB entirely because it's too revealing. It's comical that some post their entire lives on FB. People on Shroomery.org said to ditch it entirely because of the drama and gossip associated with FB. I just want a second opinion.


What is everyone's thought of FB?


We have cell phones which we can communicate via texts, so why is FB so essential to most people? Gossip?

Elaborate please. I want some juicy facts about why FB is dangerous. Is it dangerous to everyone? It seems as though it could be dangerous to everyone because there continues to be references to its use on CNN and Fox.

Hell yeah. I don't post anything on there. Just use it to keep in contact with a few friends through private message. You hear all the time about Facebook mining data and law enforcement and other government organizations using to track people down and gather information. It's in the news all the time. Even if you are a straight A, model citizen, I would still be concerned. Too many privacy issues. You know, in the book 1984, George Orwell envisioned Big Brother (where that term was coined) having to put video and audio recording devices in everyone's living room in order to keep tabs on them. I find it ironic that it is the complete opposite. We are voluntarily putting so much information out there about ourselves that the government and big business have TOO MUCH information. The problem is sorting through the massive amounts of data for what they need. They don't need cameras and recording devices in our houses. It's getting to the point where it isn't just us paranoid folks and people in tin foil hats worrying about things like social media and other privacy issues that come with some of our new technologies. Even fair minded, mainstream, middle America is starting to realize it. People that post every single detail about their lives on places like Facebook either got to be naïve or stupid. If I could think of at least half a dozen ways just of the top of my head to use Facebook to rob someone or hurt someone if I was a criminal or wanted to hurt someone.

Years ago it was discovered that the CIA funded Facebook through a shill corporation. That has to be for a good reason. I would not trust them in the least.

I dont trust FB. Sure im on there, but I dont send messages or post things that could lead to any encounter I don't prefer to have. Also have my privacy settings about as strict as they can get. I think as long as your profile isnt public, and you keep only your real friends as friends (not I knew you in second grade so lets be best buddies on fb b.s.) then you should be ok.

a lot of controversial posts seem to vanish from FB pretty often too, and the posters don't get message saying they were reposrted for abuse/spam/etc, so it really seems as if FB is doing some of their own censorship on members' posts.

i doubt this would be the beginning of the end for FB people dont use FB JUST to "like" marijuana pages . lol people generally use it to connect with their grandma or their nephews.

Facial recognition software - When someone posts a photo and tags a name it is stored on the system. Any subsequent photos
can be linked with the software.
Friends lists - Easy to track any connections to people, the photos mentioned above make it extremely easy to see who you
are out with and what you do.
GPS (location posting) - They can track your movements through posting.
They claim ownership over your data, they can and will do anything they see fit with your data.
Law enforcement, bill collectors, private investigators amongst a wide array of others use it to find and track people.


The site, IMO is big brother watching your every move and collecting immense amounts of
data on everyone. People post it up willy nilly and don't even think about the potential ramifications.

It is not just govs or otherwise "legal" groups that harvest data either, it is also the more sinister types
that do it too. Getting phone numbers, addresses etc.

There is soo much more going on that we don't even know about yet because for the most part people
don't know what FB is doing until it is either too late or someone exposes the changes after they are made.

Could posting photos of Shrooms really raise a red flag? There are so many mushrooms out there that look similar to others, hence why so many campers die from picking so called "edible" mushrooms. MJ is a dead give away because there is no sending it to a laboratory to be tested.

Illegal activities of any kind could have you put into a "watch list" in the db.
Keywords, photos, locations etc could all be put into the same db attached to your name,
that info then has the potential to be sold or given away.

It would all be admissible because it came from you as an admission, the locations, people and photos
can also be used to profile you and your behaviors.

It is crazy that people are so liberal on FB but are so firm in the expectation of privacy.

Also, consider this: A person does not even need to have a FB account, if one person posts a
photo with you in it and tags you then FB can the use the facial recognition and apply a name
to the photo that can be compared to every other photo on the system to "find" you and other
people/places (connections).

This is my fear on any website, especially as software improves, databases (metadata) contain more info and computational power increases. Your picture on FB along with your hometown information linked to your RIU photo(s) and activities especially if the website is specifically targeted for any reason?

I found an app on Android market that allows you to set a fake GPS location. You can then check in at a location that you're really not at. You can check in at Tehran Iran while not even being there.

i'd call facebook "potentially" dangerous. having a list of your known associates, previous locations, photos, stuff you've "liked' and all that is just another way to tie you to things even if you're not an idiot and don't post idiotic things.

and what the hell is this new shit of locked content on random websites and you have to "like" the page before you can even read the content. why the fuck would i make a record that i 'like" something when i don't even know what's in it?

what pisses me off is that i've never had a facebook, but when i get my new android phone, if i want to use a lot of the features to their potential, i need to have a google+ profile with my actual name on it to sync it to. they already converted the google play store so that i can't rate or comment on ANY apps, and the apps have nothing to do with google, but they run the app store now. some apps have features restricted until i "rate the app" but i fucking can't unless i register myself and i can't complain in the app store about it. they're taking away the "optional" nature of social networking by tying it to services that i really want to use and essentially making it mandatory.

i'm not really the foil hat type, but that sounds like a fucking conspiracy.
