it really depends on the variety of onion, long day vs short day. either way its similar to garlic, harvest once the stalks/tops are done growing and dying back, usually early summer. if they bolt and go to flower i would cut the flowers off, but it may not help the bulbs have probably stopped growing at that point. you can dig them up to eat or store in a cool dark place to replant in the fall. Thanks for that summit I was wondering the same thing, but honestly didn't bother to google it . How about onions when should you harvest those? Was it pointless for me to have planted the whole onion, wil lit just get bigger, or will it spout other onions like some bulb plants do(ie. the way lillies spread underground over time making more bulbs)
also no problem planting the same onion, again this depends on variety though. some will split and try to grow new onion sets (the little bulbs) but some will continue to grow and get huge. for example many of the larger onions in grocery stores are around 2 years old when we buy them to eat.
hope this helps
