how many plants 1000 watt hps

First time grower. Any advice is appreciated. I have an 800 sq ft basement with 8 ft ceilings. I'm gonna buy clones. Probaly sage or a type of kush. I'm gonna grow in dirt. I was wondering how many plants I should flower under a 1000 watt hps?

You could grow 20 small plants or one jumbo size plant, when its comes to lights its not about how many plants they will support but instead about how much area the light will cover. One 1000w will provide good coverage for a 5' X 5' area of plants...

Fill up a square meter under your light. That's the approximate foot print of a thousand watt HID light (depending on your hood).

IOW, it doesn't matter if you have one huge plant, or 8 smaller ones so long as they fit within a square meter under the light and all of your budsites are getting adequate light.

How many lights do plan to buy? How many plants can you run?

I would say 36 per light over 4x4 bed with 7-10 day veg.

There is no such thing as advising in "i would say" numbers...

Plants grow, branch, vigor, stretch, and respond to training is so many different ways, if your new to the strain and new to the game its going to all trial and error before you'll get anywhere near figuring out whats going to be best.

Know how much area your light will cover, ballpark guess your plant count and how they will grow, then roll the dice....

Yep, the general rule I've always heard is around 50 watts per square foot.

To the OP, you're thinking in reverse. The wattage doesn't dictate the number of plants you can grow. The number and size of the plants dictates the wattage you'll need.

It all depends on many variables as mentioned , I can run 6 decent size girls under a 1000 or I can run one or two fat girls and as well I could fill a 5x5 area with 72 small plants if there is some extra room for bleed off light .

Another factor is light distance as this alone can change the footprint , I am more fond of lights being closer than further way . I do not like low light growing conditions so I keep my lamps as close as I possibly can to the tops but I use 4 lamps minimal in order to achieve more light distribution .

If you can afford , I would run two 600's verses a thousand , you ll have better coverage and more control in the end , plus if there is an issue with a bulb or ballast you still have one running in the meanwhile .

I was recommending that from an efficiency standpoint. If he was using only one light, that's what he could
get the most out of . If he was buying teenish clones he could get 6 harvests a year at more then 2units per.

I'd have to disagree about 600's. I had a split room at one point with one side being 4-1k's and the other side i had 4-600's running off of those dual 600w ballast lumatek makes. Having the same genetics side by side in the same room with the lighting being the only variable really showed how much you are loosing with the 600's in comparison to the 1k's

also you have to find the sweet spot in terms of bulbs..we were blowing bulbs every couple of weeks until we found ones that were compatible with the ballasts

1k's may be better for trees but they are far from being more efficient then 600's for sog or scrog even three 400's will out
yield two 600's if you lower them enough. You may have not been letting the 600's lay low enough. Check them out with a light meter, you might dig the 600's out of the closet if you still have them.
