I think bonsai and main lining are completly different.
A person would main line a plant to eventually put it into flower.
A person would bonsai a plant to keeep a small mother im veg to take clones from.
imo.

could just not put it in flower and take clones off of it 2 clones 4 clones 8 clones 16 clones 32 clones 64 clones etc.. if mainlining isn't the closest thing to bonsai then I don't know what bonsai is

SFV OG in blue 3" pot , Cotton Candy Kush in a 2-in. pot
Planted in RO / FFOF Mix with a pinch of super soil at the bottom of the pot.
Potted from clone 6/20/13.
I love plants and I am doing this strictly for the fun of it and to see what happens. You really never know with plants until you try

I would keep in mind that unlike traditional bonsai Marijuana needs a big root ball to feed it and letting it get root bound will slow its growth but also will give you trouble trying to keep it healthy

ive done it for fun, heres what i did: i used a cloth pot then folded the top of the cloth pot down over the dirt so if i laid the plant on its side it wouldent fall out. then over time, maybe a month or 2, i trained the plant to grow in funny ways by having the plant on its side, upside down, really every random way and since my light was always above it hanging down, my plant looked like a baseball on a stick. it was a fun game to make it look like that but it wasent like.. a productive choice.
as far as getting root bound goes, theres no such thing really as getting root bound assuming you have the right tools. products like hygrozyme change the way that all works. i agree totally tho that marijuana likes rootspace and for a fast growing plant more water is needed then havinging a small container allows

Its a out door SFV. The plant was in the cup for about 2 months and the I puled it out and cut off the bottom 70% of the roots. I then just placed the reaming 30% right on top of new soil. It was then there another month. If you look at the picture you will notice the bottom 70% of the soil is darker and the roots are newer. Also notice it is not yet root bound. After it becomes root bound for a while I will cut the roots and repeat. Although I did move it up to a one gallon pot it will remain in it until Oct. I do believe that the art of bonsai does include small pots, root restriction for controlled growth, and pruning but I do want more then popcorn.

SFV 4" pot, did not cut roots this time, after seeing the root ball of the cotton candy in the 2" pot I am deciding to wait a couple more weeks.

CCK in the 1 1/2" pot, I ended up cutting about half of the clone block she started in, wish I would have waited one more week for a little more root structure but I saw roots poking out the bottom of the pot and I was anxious. Her head drooped for a little bit but I just checked on her this morning and her head is held high once again, we'll see what happens.
And yes, both are in flower right now...HAAaa ;b

I brought my SFV inside to flower. I do want to screw with the roots just to do it but I think I will leave this one to flower now. It has been changed from a outdoor bonsai to a LST'd indoor type thing. Now I just want to see how it flowers.
