~Kosher Kush~ T5/defoliating

This is a little bit of a delayed journal but it will work.

This is a test plant for defoliating technique.

One single KK grown from a seed from Amsterdam. Lights are 4 feet from floor and is grown in soil. Fed organic nutrients every other week; water is distilled from the store, and given weekly. Plant is under a 16.5/7.5 Light schedule. Air is circulated by a large fan in an off direction in the room. Reflective layering all around.

The goal is to test the controversial defoliating technique and see the results. We plan to full defoliate at-least twice. When necessary we weigh down or route shoots elsewhere so all nodes will get the most light. We have also topped her once already and will once more to encourage more nodes to grow.

Strain: Kosher Kush (Multiple 1st place Cannabis Cup Indica winner)
Light: T5-HO(4k luiminens)
Soil: Organic Black Gold (0-0-0)
Nutrients: Roots Organic Buddha Grow (2-.25-1.5)

hey be careful when defoliating. not all strains take well to it.

a couple of things to consider before you continue to follow through with this process:
1. overall health of the plant(s)
2. vigor of plant(s). if plant(s) is known for slow growth or aren't that resilient, i would suggest against it.
3. calyx to leaf ratio (which should be very good, considering the genetics).

good luck with the experiment.

Thanks for the good advice.

It should be a good strain besides that it is slower than others. She's in good health and took to stage 1 just fine. I expect her to take a few days to recoup and should double in shoots by Tuesday.

Defoliating did put her into energy reserve for about 5 days. This may have been partially due to the fact she was nutrition deficient.

The soil we started with was 0.0.0 and apparently the weekly dosing of 2-.25-1.5 was insufficient as she grew. Appears additional energy (light/nutrients/c02) at the defoliation stage would be beneficial to growth. Will test more next time.

So now we are up to H20 every 5 days or so and feeding on the same schedule the same nutrients, heavier.

Leaves were yellow on the edges and stems began to get very purple. Light "burning" and warped edges appeared.

After re balancing the nutrients and H20. The leaves became more green and new growth is perfect.

Here's a picture of the remnants of damage.

We plan on maybe another 1-3 weeks of vegetative growth before we switch over to flowering and see what she's really made of.

So it's been about five weeks from seed now and she has recovered from the defoliating just fine. We now have 15 potential bud sites; this is going to have to be reduced from 1/4- 1/2; in the first two weeks of flowers to allow for more focus more growth on a few select sites.

Been debating on flowering. One more week of VEG at the most then we'll switch.

Went to check out the girl today. When I checked the collection tray for bugs; her ass hairs were all hanging out the bottom!

There's no water in the collection tray and she was in a 3 gallon potter.

rooty5weeks.jpg

So time for a transfer, sigh. That delays flowering again. Since this pushes out veg I was going to take advantage of it and push it a little more.

I took 5 cuttings from her (I know!) and put them in a chamber to give away to asking patients. This strain seems most demanding and defiantly hungry. I wonder how much she can handle; there are still aprox 10 sites left and more will defiantly grow with the extended time and cuttings.

Here she is in her new 8 gallon pot, I believe its called a Goliath something or other, supposed to let lots of air in. Might as well test that too.
newpot 5 weeks.jpg

When adding soil this time I used "ROOTS ORGANICS POTTING SOIL" a coco based fiber with tons of organic ingredients. The bucket and the soil should increase aeration and promote a more through drying.

EDIT: Forgot to add she is now getting a teaspoon of Lemon Juice every watering.

Figured you wanted to see the young-in's too.

KK clones.jpg

Yeah some are pretty big but they were all pretty big. :weed:

coming along nicely.

is that how you root your clones? just curious, because it seems like you didn't trim the leaves in half and every time i tried that, they never rooted or took too long to root.

I cut from the top (mostly). Smallest ones I can with 1-2 joints. (My main goal was to open canopy space tho)

Then I shave all four sides of the bottom of the stem with a razor and split the trunk in half a little. Then soak in cup of distilled for water 30+ min.

I don't trim any leaves for maximum photosynthesis. I've seen it done they just end up looking so unhealthy. I am not even sure why they do it.

I clone with honey and "herbs"s. After multiple dips and letting it sit for 60 seconds and dry. We put them in coco mix jiffy type pots, squeeze soil around a little, mist all over and add a bowl of warm water inside. Goes in my hard plastic dome under 3700k white T5. Lastly I blow my hot air into it with a tube every so often.

Wait 4-7 days or until rots show through pods.

Sorry no pic's to support due to the trauma and urgency required by this war.

I wake up in the middle of the night to find clones and clone pods all over the house in a kind of "shit dance" pattern.

As well as a brown masked pittbull with his face in the corner not looking at me.

CLONE WARS!!! I sprung into action and swooped up all the fallen solders and placed them into a cup of water.

Re made pods with thigh high pantyhose and insta grow soil. They were already beginning to root so I slipped them back in my new pods, wet them again.

Sprayed the leaves and dome and put it in a LOCKED BOX this time.

This is the end of the Clone Wars... bongsmilie

Please pray for the fallen solders...

Update on KK, she is growing so quick. It is a very resilient strain.
IMG_2536.jpgIMG_2537.jpg

We've been having some trouble controlling her. Every time I tie a branch down she grows 3 more branches from that one and they spring upwards covering the canopy.

So, we decided its time for defoliation stage 2. We ended up removing over 17g of fan leaves from the plant.
IMG_2541.jpg

After trimming the fat, and some more training. All the lower sites have plenty of lights now!
IMG_2538.jpgIMG_2539.jpg

I assume you're wondering how the babies are doing.
IMG_2543.jpg

Doing good, healthy and smelly!

No other changes, to update.

So, we're into day 2 of 12/12. (flowering)

About a week ago I began to lower the light cycle by a half hour every day. Yesterday we hit 12/12 and switched over to 4-T5 3k red bulbs. Nutrients went up by 1/3, water remains the same.

Stage 2 defoliation went great. KK is so resilient, it is now recovering from any cuts within the same day and continues new growth. I've been trying to keep my Edward Scissorhands off of her.

Here is how she looks today.
IMG_2567.jpgIMG_2568.jpg

Even though she has had a slow transition to 12/12 there is still not much sexing yet but here some porn.
IMG_2569.jpgIMG_2570.jpg

I'm sure you wondered how the clones came out.
IMG_2566.jpg

All survived the "clone wars" but one is too slow growing and is going to the chopping block. cry cry
IMG_2564.jpgIMG_2565.jpg

Oddly enough the one clone that had the most trauma from the "clone wars" last week is the biggest and strongest clone! (This was made with a legging in a hurry)
IMG_2563.jpg

The other 3/5 were good too.
IMG_2560.jpgIMG_2561.jpgIMG_2562.jpg

Yes, that one has roots ABOVE the water line. LOL

They are now in their pre-teen pots and will be waiting for cycle two of the defoliation experiment.

Checked on ole girl today, freaking blew up again.
IMG_2606.jpg

One week ago we cut off all the fan leaves and now she has some as big as my palm.
IMG_2608.jpg

Decided to check out the bud sites up close. Nothing juicy yet but cool to look at.

Nice man, Im about to flip a Kosher Kush as well, pumped to see what kind of a stretch you get after 2-3 weeks of flower! My pheno is a stretchy little girl as well so Im thinking I may have to flip while they are a little shorter than my last grow. I topped and LST'd her too so hoping that will tame her!

Thanks!

I think she (KK) is a gluten for punishment. The next defolailation on clones will be more often and started younger. I believe she likes trimming but needs to adjust her biology to respond to cuts and grow quicker. After the 3rd or so major cutting she started not to miss the leaves and grew the same if not faster.

I did find that after topping the side branches grow the same length as the topped main stalk. So I tie the top two down lower to prevent them from breaching the canopy line.

Id also like to try a vine type, and cut all branches aside from a main vine that I train to create a structured rounded bush. I think would work well with KK too.

What's still left to be found is if yield is greater.

Just over two weeks in flowering and sexy is showing.

I have cut maybe 10 fan leaves over the past week at different times to open up canopy space and had to re tie all the branches lower to flatten it out.

It looks much better now.

IMG_2682.jpgIMG_2679.jpgIMG_2681.jpg

There are probably 25+ branches with bud-sites. We decided against limiting to just 10 and just let her do her thing. We will continue to defoliate in a few days, again at 5th or 6th week.

Paid a visit to the girl today, she's three weeks into flowering.

IMG_2708.jpg

Cut the shit out of it earlier in the week and you could see straight to the gravel. All covered up now.
IMG_2710.jpg

About 4ft tall now, 30+ branches/sites.
