This is the only soil I use. Straight from the bag. I add no perlite though I did years ago when first starting out. Some of the negative reviews I've heard are it holds too much water which is arguable if you like to water frequently, this is one of the reasons why I like using it as I don't have to water as much and in the beginning I made the same mistake like a lot of beginning growers do by using an inferior soil like Miracle Grow Organic in the brownish gold colored bag.
I top dress with my own home produced worm castings out of my worm bins. I NEVER use bottled nitrogen fertilizers. The only nitrogen my plants get come from what's in the soil and the top dressing of worm castings and worm teas. Since I trigger flowering on clones with plants that are around 9 tall, I don't see the need to hit them with bottled nitrogen and the plants do not run a nitrogen deficiency with as much worm castings as I use.
I do use the following-
Earth Juice Bloom , Earth Juice Catalyst , Earth Juice MicroBlast, Nectar of the Gods Humic Acid
and Grandma's Molasses for worm tea production, and a bag of Epsom Salt.
Another common complaint of FF Ocean Soil is that it's high in nitrogen, this might be a possibility also since I never use any type of Grow fertilizer out of a bottle and never have a nitrogen deficiency, but then again I go thru A LOT of worm castings but they are a non-burning source of nitrogen.
Some bags I've noticed have a slightly greater bark content compared to others. Overall, I am pleased with Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. In December of 2011, my local grow store had a sale on FF Ocean Soil for $12.00 a bag, I stocked up and bought 10 bags.
I also use 3 gallon Root Pouch fabric pots. I'll never go back to flowering in solid plastic pots.
