Is the Earth growing?

We can speculate about shooting fireballs out our asses for as long as we like - but it ain't never going to happen.
Ummm... It has happened, is happening, and will happen in the future!! People are very capable of shooting fireballs out their asses..YouTube - Girl lights her fart on fire! :mrgreen:

But, it is a youtube vid, so it must not be credible and I bet it has been edited:mrgreen:HAHA jk email.

I guess this thread sux.....

it doesn't suck - i'll jump off and let the speculation flow.
Naw, its not you. It just seems that no one else is interested in it.

I understand you email. You are strictly by the books. Its cool man..:mrgreen:

On this subject....I will only know what I'm told and I wouldnt know the difference either way..I don't really know if the world is getting bigger or smaller, or even if it's a question to be answered.

A study done by the department of veterans affairs medical center found that studies are offten misleading.-hahahaha

~LOL~ The last time I watched TV, I heard about a study that said bottled water is bad for you.. So your only other option is either spring, well, or tap water(tap water has fluoride )

"Fluoride is good for kids" YouTube - Notebook: Bottled Water You have to watch this!

The real truth about fluoride is YouTube - Fluoride Poisoning

YouTube - Professional Perspectives: Fluoride in Tap Water

YouTube - Dangers of Fluoride

Anyone else feel like the news media is not our friends??

The earth is a closed system, save solar radiation,and meteorites.
Check this, I love physical science and physical geography.
Conservation of mass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The news media brainwashes people into sheeple.:dunce:
Your own examples of solar radiation and meteorites refutes your statement that the Earth is a closed system.

I don't think there is any dispute when a chunk of space rock hits the Earth (which they do on occasion) the mass of Earth grows by the mass of the rock.

So yes, the Earth does grow - but the youtube video is not talking about this type of growth.

:hump:Wikipedia, great source!

.......must be true.
misinformation is brainwashed, my sheeply friend.
at least wiki gives you a chance to dispute the information. Not to mention you can verify the link above in any 8th grade (or above) science book. Wiki articles (the trustworthy ones) will also cite legitimate sources.

except for budget - there is no difference between watching a youtube video and watching a TV program. It is still a one-way communication with an agenda. Of course there are many trustworthy and accurate youtube videos which can be verified using separate sources.

do you think believing in the "law of conservation" means you're brainwashed? WTF?!?!?!

100% right, it all has to be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm so sick of "agendas"
Well - truth be told we all have an agenda. My agenda is to extinguish pseudo-scientific claptrap and trample credulity.

While maintaining a healthy imagination and ability for speculation, but I find the more I learn about the natural, evidence-based universe - the more amazing it becomes.

I mean black holes, pulsars, quasars, extra-solar worlds - all proven to exist - are far more fascinating and awe-inspiring than anything I could dream up. And they are real and can be studied and understood (to the best of our abilities).

I mean how much more whacky do people need the universe to be that they feel compelled to make up weird shit?

Ok, as we all should know, MASS AND DIAMETER ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS:mrgreen:. I didn't say that the mass is growing, but, rather I implied (for the most part anyways)that the diameter is growing because the plants have been harvesting co2, nutes and water and turning them into layers of soil, which take up more space than the elements that went into the dead plant(my uneducated speculation:mrgreen:). I gave the example tree rings. (I know that as the dead plant matter mixes in with the soil and then after many years moves down from the top soil, it compresses and would innately lose some volume.) My point being is- there are always new layers of top soil forming from the dying vegetation(seemingly like rings/layers of a tree).

"Mass is also not generally conserved in open systems, when various forms of energy are allowed into, or out of, the system"- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_of_mass

But, after reading this clip from the latter link, I realized that maybe I should imply that we could be potentially gaining mass. Heres my argument.

As we all know, Earth is NOT a closed system! We get bombarded with energy in the form of radiation(visible light, UV, etc) all the time. So, if we use this formula E=MC^2 than we know this is a correlation between mass and energy(E=energy, M=mass and C=the constant speed of light which is equal to ~300,000,000 meters/second). Ok, since you can agree with me on this(I hope you can:mrgreen:) I will show you how we theoretically should be gaining mass all the time, even if its utterly diminutive. But at a constant rate, and over millions of millions of years, it might add up with enormity-if you plug in the correct numbers.

If you have taken one or two algebra classes you should realize the following. E=MC^2 or M= E/C^2 are equal. So to verbalize the second equation- mass is equal to energy divided by the constant speed off light squared.

And thusly, the more energy the earth harvests, the more mass it should gain, in theory anyways. So if you can get an accurate measurement/figure of how much energy is harvested by the Earth annually, you can than theoretically figure how much mass she has gained. Multiply this by the millions of years that the earth has been around, and there is your figure for how much added mass the suns energy has added to the earth.

I'm sure you can follow that email. Thats me using my imagination and not being afraid of being wrong:mrgreen: I'd be glad to hear a rebuttal on my logic. And if would be really cool if someone found out how much energy is being harvested by the earth from space radiation per year- Than we could really figure something out.

Very interesting ideas. I don't know if you're wrong or not - but as I enjoy playing devil's advocate - i will probe at what i perceive as the weak spots in what you're saying... just for fun though since i really don't know if our premises are correct. So i am speculating along with you.

But first i would like to mention that we know (by measurement) that the diameter of the Earth is increasing at the equator - like many people, the Earth has a bulge around the middle which is getting larger. You can investigate why this is but it will boil down to conflicting gravitational pulls (Earth/Moon and mostly the Sun).

But this is different that the claim the Earth is expanding like a balloon being blown up as the Earth expansionists seem to be implying.

Anyway back to the infamous E=mc2. Nothing like bringing some Einstein into it :)

All equivalent:
E=mc2
m=E/c2
c2=E/m

And there is little doubt that the Sun is bombarding the Earth with visible and other forms of light/energy. So I think what the Earth expansionists are wondering is where does all this energy go? Much of it is of course reflected off the Earth's surface and back into space - but that would still leave a great deal of energy being received by the Earth, right?

Well i would say our moderate climate is the answer to where the majority of the energy goes. The energy is not lost but remains in the form of heat. Heating of the interior of the Earth which keeps are oceans relatively warm which keeps our climate hospitable (with the aid of our atmosphere which keeps just enough of the good energy in).

Luckily we have a few other planets to look at to see what is happening on other worlds. None seem to be expanding and they are also being bombarded by the Sun's energy. Little Mercury and mysterious Venus are even closer to the Sun and they do not seem to be getting larger. Nor does Mars - which is further away.

And if you think the Earth would expand because of energy - then for sure the gas giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn would be even more prone to expansion since gas takes very little energy to begin expanding (which is why they are so large in the first place) and yet they do not seem to be expanding either.

I'm sure if you did some digging around you could find out how much energy the Earth absorbs from Sun annually - at least a ballpark figure anyway.

anyway - just some off-the-cuff ideas that i think are related to what you're saying.

I'd sure like to see the proof of black holes. So far I believe they are just a theory. Geeze, they may be the space where Jesus hangs out,~LOL~.
