I know some terpenoids may have an impact on the effects of cannabis, but I don't see any cites. This just seems like conjecture to me.

You can't simply say that "Taste plays huge role in potency", when a quick academic search would show you there isn't much research in how they play in an effect or role. If you really want to read some interesting research, you need to look at some of the papers published, in peer review, from Isreal and some European countries. Otherwise, you are simply talking shit. Not trying to be a dick, but you can't assert something to be truth, without having evidence to support said statement.

You must have not read it, or didn't notice that it's an article, not a study, and how many times the words "could", "perhaps" and "may" appear, indicating inconclusive data. Also, it doesn't state anywhere that terpenes affect potency. They're throwing around the idea (amongst many other ideas) that terpenes work for aromatherapy. Too many loose ends and theories in that link. They even talk about calamus which has nothing to do with terpenes. So try again dude.

"Calamus root is the best antidote for the ill effects of marijuana. . . . if one smokes a pinch of calamus root powder with the marijuana, this herb will completely neutralize the toxic side effects of the drug."
 
If you don't believe terpenes work for aromatherapy than I'm not going to argue with you.

Taste and smell are very closely related.

Not saying there may not being a link but the claim flavors and smells equate potency is not currently present. Still lots of exploration to do on this great plant. Yet presenting misinformation should be avoided.

Point being taste and smell does not equal potency, at least at this point. If you care about taste and smell then that's your prerogative. I care about potency first and foremost. Not colors, tastes and s smells. Those are more or less extras in a good plant.
 
I would argue that specific MJ terpenes found within any given strain not only account for smell and flavor, but potency as well.
 
In Cannabis:
-over 120 different terpenes can be manufactured by Cannabis, some only in trace amounts with others in double-digit percentage
-produced in the Trichomes, the same glands where THC is produced, comprising between 10 and 20 percent of the total oils produced by the glands
-about 10-29 percent of marijuana smoke resin is composed of terpenes/terpenoids
-drug sniffing dogs are able to smell odorous terpenes, not THC
-age, maturation and time of day can affect the amount and ratios of terpenes. They are constantly being produced but are vaporized by heat and light of the day… so harvest in early morning!
-climate and weather also affect terpene and flavonoid production. The same variety, even genotype, can produce a different terpene profile when grown in different soils or with different fertilizers.
-in addition to many circulatory and muscular effects, some terpenes interact with neurological receptors
-a few bind weakly to Cannabinoid receptors
-others seem to alter the permeability of cell membranes and allow in either more or less THC
-others affect serotonin and dopamine chemistry (neurotransmitters)
gets you higher-second from the bottom bullet I think.
 
Interesting stuff. I'm skeptical about terpines affecting potency, but I really don't know enough about it to chime in one way or another. The problem to me is that nobody really knows enough to make such claims. As long as marijuana remains a schedule 1 drug, there will be very little in the way of peer-reviewed scientific data on this. If you look at the references for some of these articles, they cite Ed Rosethals "Big Book of Buds", and marijuana blogs as sources for their info. Not very compelling, imo

I'm not exactly making a direct correlation between terpenes and potency. As you elude to, there is just not enough science to truly make that claim. That said, if you find herb so chuck full of terpenes that ppl know it is in your pocket before you walk in a room, it is more likely than not, pretty potent :weed:

That's a very good point. I would counter that with TGA strains. My experience with them have been that they all smell wonderful, but lack a bit in the potency department. Also, Kali Mist is probably the most potent weed I've come across so far, and it really doesn't have a strong odor to it at all.

Either way, it's fascinating stuff and I am really looking forward to more research on this plant. They haven't even scraped the surface yet.

Thats just it. TGA strains have always seemed to lack potency. I've smoked enough of them,and my overall feeling is meh. Sure it looks pretty and smells nice, but the lacking of a solid high seems to be a consistent aspect of TGA strains. Of course it could be the grower, but again, I've seen TGA gardens from the weed nerd herds that I wouldn't even bother with the plants in my garden. Between the nanners poppin out seeding the garden, and the overall lacking of uniformity. Its a fucking dice roll. Makes since as he uses the same two fucking plants in half of his line up.

But back to the turpinoids, the article you posted has sources, but not the type I'm discussing. Peer reviewed, published studies, or those in the works are what I want to see. Anythnig else is simply postulating, and really isn't useful to try and prove a point.

I don't have the answer, I'm sure like most of us we'd like one. As the legality of cannabis continues its steady march around the globe, I'm sure these questions will begin to provide answers and even more questions. I think its fascinating the information that continues to come out from Israel in particular.
 
Very interesting dialog, I think. My PlushBerry stunk when growing, and had the best smell of anything I've grown. Most pleasant smell, I should say. But also the weakest I've grown. But for a daytime working buzz, it was really perfect for me. Break out the SSH at night, which doesn't stink as much during grow or in the bag.
