Mary Jane Didn't Used To Be This Hard To Grow

Southern California in the late 1980's I take one of the seeds in the baggie I bought and put some dirt into a margarine tub and put it in my window and it grows. I transplant into a five gallon paint can and put it on my girlfriends patio and it gets up around five feet with buds.

Fast forward to 2013 I buy six seeds, AK-47 and generic(?) from an acquaintance and ten seeds from a Canadian Mary Jane "Seed Company" in Vancouver. I follow all the insane methods of germinating the seeds and planting them into sterile environments and I'm out $100 with nothing to show for it. The point is Mary Jane did not used to be that hard to grow. What happened? I think the old baggies were a better distribution system for the average person for seeds and strong buds than the modern BIG BUSINESS it has turned into. I'm saying there are a lot of people making money selling snake oil at the carnival. Add even more money for the special soil, insect poison, lime, sprayer(s), and time wasted. Who the hell sells ten seeds for $60 plus $10 for shipping which is an 85 cent stamp? They should give them away - instead of complaining that Mary Jane is illegal, what are we going to do about it!

I know those so-called smart pots are from China - our Mary Jane has been outsourced so that the average person cannot grow it. The seeds from Canada suck. No Peace and Love on this post.

What happened? Well you fell for all this modern marketing bollocks that insists you do things in a certain manner/sterile environments etc etc, go back to what you know an just throw the seeds into some dirt n wait for em to sprout, if it aint broke dont fix it

no kidding, if you had results, why did you change your methods? What sterile environment are you talking about?

If you do what you did in the 80s, or follow the sticky's around here for whatever type of grow you wanna do, you should get bud if your seeds crack. Plain and simple.

I hear you....I remember the summer of 1977 when I threw a handful a Mexican ditch weed seeds behind my dad's raspberry bushes...they grew like a hot damn, in no time they were taller than the 4 foot fence

Zoom! What was that? I don't know. 1980 and 2013, hmmm. Could it be there are no seeds to be had. No, you can buy as many seeds as you can afford. The genetic thing - when did that start? Maybe these genetic freaking seeds can't stand soil. Maybe the Canadian "Seed Company" sent me some crap. Double down your bet and buy from another company. No, you're throwing good money after bad. Things are definitely hosed up. I and everyone else has been told to use sterile everything from containers to tweezers to medium to distilled water. I appreciate the stickies and I've read enough of them on the web. I think it is "buyer beware," caveat emptor, the guy recommending this product is probably selling it. The local Hawaiian punk at the "hyroponics store" was useless to me. Its big business as usual. Too big to fail.

Yea, I was dizzy with all the information and products when I started, thought they would help me grow better. Old-school organics is where it's at though, true gardening in it's purest form and the materials are cheap and easy to come by.

I say get more seeds and try again.

I'm just saying that the seed companies are driven by greed and will do whatever it takes to make money. I'll write my seed company and tell them about the success rate for their seeds. Good business would be to send replacement seeds. I'm also saying we shouldn't be dependent on seed companies. A new concept - we used to get seeds in every baggie we bought and we didn't need seed companies.

If you look at the average potency of marijuana back in the 70's and 80's and compare it to the average potency found in marijuana today you'd see an increase of more than 4% or nearly 6x what it was 30-40 years ago. Average THC content found in marijuana in 1978 barely topped 1%. No wonder why everyone was doing acid and mushrooms back then , weed just didn't get you high.

Edit: I also believe all of the new methods to growing are for optimizing how much your plant yields, so you can get alot for a little. Just my $0.02

Your math is way off dude. A 4% increase does not mean something is six times more potent. Even if you put two 0's behind that 4 you'd still be off by 200%. And if the THC content in '78 was 1%, a 6x increase would make it 6%, not the current 17-20% we see today.

I was there in 1980. I smoked the stuff and it didn't have a "name" and I could not stop laughing. My girlfriend and I could dance all night. The Humbolt Honey circa 2012 was okay - I was disoriented in space and time but it was not a fun high.

There was just as potent weed back in the 70's and 80's as there is today but just not as much as now simply put .. Man has not intervened and made something out of nothing lol , the simple truth is the average weed imported and grown in the 70's and 80's was simply low grade land race or degraded material to begin with . There was always someone with high grade import and domestic but it was held and kept from the mass for damn good reasons as it was rare in the first place and only shared within select circles .. Some old timers still laugh at some of the so called super weed of today compared to the old school genetics they knew and loved ..

Im no expert. But if you look at alot of things take athletics you will always see improvement. More research into nutrients, training facilities, knowledge and equipment. That concept can be translated to weed. When it comes to consumerism regardless legal or illegal more often than not things improve. There better understanding in more minute detail so you have to have a better knowledge.
