Jerome Mauderly, 71, and his
wife, Carolyn, 66, were asleep when escaped inmate Rodney Long, 38, broke into
their rural Bedford home a little after 10 p.m. on Monday, said Iowa Division of
Criminal Investigation spokesman Mitch Mortvedt.

Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, while Long was upstairs looking for supplies, Jerome Mauderly sneaked into the kitchen and recovered his shotgun, Mortvedt said. Carolyn Mauderly called 911 from their bedroom. When Long walked down the stairs, Jerome Mauderly shot him in the torso. Long was found lying face down in the kitchen, Mortvedt said.

Shotguns are cool, I will give you that, but I prefer a handgun for home defense. Confined spaces and all.

I have a Browning Citori that I use to shoot skeet... a lot of fun.

I have a Taurus Judge that I keep near the bed just for home defense. Yeah, I know... Taurus. But it's a throwaway so I don't really worry. I chose it for 2 reasons. It's a revolver and it can fire .410 shells. I keep it loaded with PDX1 Defender shells and they are impressive. Worst case scenario, that should work in the dark long enough for me to reach something bigger.

I'm thinking of it for "spray and pray" in the dark until I can reach more guns. That would be about 3 seconds. Those PDX1 shells are definitely more than sparrow killers.

I just cant sleep with a gun under my pillow.
I tried it.
YOu worry about pulling the trigger if you sleep, knocking it off the bed. Wonder where it is all the time. And the lump. Just doesnt work out.
Between the mattresses or under the bed works pretty well though

Zimmerman smashed his wife's ipad that she recorded his assault with. the police are attempting to extract the evidence & determine what charges are appropriate..........jail time sounds eminent in his dim future.......
