Is This Gear Worth $650

All,

I viewed this equipment today that was part of an auction at a storage unit. The seller will sell it all for $650.00. Is it worth the money and aren't the bulbs move expensive to operate? I don't know if the bulbs or the ballasts work. I don't that much about setting up the hoods. I already have a fan and duct and a grow tent. I'm not on the mainland so shipping is an issue if I find gear online. Any opinion is better than what I know about this gear:

1. 2 tents of some sort


2. 2 Global Greenhouse Lightings - Athena 600 and Helias 400


3. Vortex powerfan VTX 600


4. Daystar AC


5. 2 plastic trays for plants


6. Phresh Filter 6" X 24" 550 CFM

9. 3 HPS (?) bulbs retailed at appx $100 each,


10. 4 ducts.

wow that's a hard question, I would not pay that for used equipment, especially the bulbs as I never buy used, you'll be spending all the money for electricity and imagine those bulbs have been already used up way too many cycles. Where I live, I wouldn't pay that for those "used" equipments but then again, a bottle of water could be worth $650 in desert.

mrblue, have you ever heard of Helios (Helias) 400 and if it is a ballast does it burn bulbs out? I had a hard time tracking it down on the web. The hoods with glass and vent holes on both ends are for a fan to cool the bulb I think. I would hate to invest that much money to find out that nothing matched, the bulbs were burned out, or more parts were needed to make the hoods work. I have heard that an HPS bulb should be used during flowering/blooming. Not sure how much heat these put out. Thanks.

sheldonblack, that was my gut reaction to spending that kind of money on used bulbs too plus the fact that I don't have an understanding of ballasts. Plus, when my wife finds $650 missing a divorce would cost a lot more than $650. Maybe its good gear but I don't really know. He said I could resell it on Craig's List. If that's the case why doesn't he sell it on Craig's List and let me pick out the items I want. Thanks!

i would say depends on quality of the items... how long they were used etc... 650 for used is pretty steep.. just my opinion.. id rather spend more for new equipment that i know will work.

You can discern the life or usage each hps bulb has had by looking at the tube inside the bulb and paying attention to the blackened ends of the tube, I have noticed via about 20 grows using 600 hps eye hortilux which I know 2 of which are in the photo. Just pay attention to that tube and how black it is or isn't at either end of the tube. Not fool proof but it'll give ya a general sense of how much use they've seen. Also eye hortilux bulbs are worth 100.00 a piece BRAND NEW. Bearing in mind its all used and you grabbing it makes them have one less storage locker to clean out maybe they'd negotiate? Not a bad find though!

Also id like to add for your pleasure DO NOT TOUCH THE BULBS WITH YOUR BARE OILY FINGERS if you can help it! They can be senstitive like that so I would suggest grabbing some paper towels to hold em with.

Tell him that's all you have, and wave the money under his nose, and I'll bet he takes it. But first figure out how you could use everything he offers. You should then add up the cost of the items you really need if you bought them new, and see how much you are really saving. If you don't need all the stuff, ask him how much for the things you can really use. Don't spend money on shit you really have no use for, and test everything before you buy it. $650 is the sellers price, so make him give you a buyers price, which I would say is around $500 for all the items listed. Maybe the case with Hortilux but I've bought other brands(sunmaster) that off the bat they look like used up bulbs. Also I've bought 600watt Hortilux for $65 including shipping off Ebay in the past, if shipping wasn't gonna be an issua. Again god knows if those bilbs were touched or even dropped. NEVER BUY USED BULBS unless you knew exctly how many hours on them and who handled them. Just my opinion. Make them bears dance.

I decided to stay married and not buy the $650 storage locker lights and tents. I picked up a tent yesterday and assembled it last night. Are they all as hard to assemble as the one I bought? I bought it used so I don't know the brand. The pole were snap-in's and the canvas was really had to stretch over the poles. So I can put the plants in there after I setup the cross braces -just in the nick of time. The three little Maui Waui's are startin to smell up the place.

I always put my hand in a sock to change out bulbs.. thought I was an odd ball for doing do lol..

I'm a printer and we use UV ink that goes through lamps in order to cure..
All the new bulbs say right in the packaging not to touch with bare fingers, and even come with a special wet wipe type thing to use after you install the bulb to remove and prints before firing the bulb for the first time..
So I try and take the same precaution with grow lights as well..

With the price of a good mh and hps these days, precautions must be taken to not hurt the bulb. I get good deals on bulbs but it still hurts when I flip all of them to new ones.

Yeah... I tend to be a believer in better quality bulbs being better suited for growing out beloved plants, and cheaper ones better suited for lighting a dark warehouse..
I was soo pissed when my $125 eye hortilux blew after like a month in my digital ballast..

If I put them in a sunny window (sliding glass door) I wonder if that counts as full sunlight? What if it is sunny but cloudy, the kind of day you can get a really good sunburn? Do the plants get the benefit of the sun or what?

For sure racer, I love my eye hortilux, only bulbs ill flower with! Just changed four out a few months ago so have a run or two left in them. I am glad hps bulbs aren't as expensive as the mh I run I think retail on that is up in the twos.

 

[Lo Budget]

The glass will block some of the energy. How much light per day would they get in your window? I'd put them on the lanai if you can/have one. While it may be possible to grow using window light exclusively, it usually doesn't work very well. A big south window would be best if you're going to do it.
