The Pros and Cons of Rollitup!

Take for example last winter when a user told a mod that he wanted to rape her just to see the pain in her eyes. Don't you think that mod wanted to take action against the offender to what I seen as going too far? Dude got to stay.
Edit: forgot the nr 1 rule: never ever tolerate any shit towards moderators from members that were warned, that is what empowers them to enforce the rules equally.
The offender of which you speak should be shot, but since that's probably not feasible, he should obviously be banned. It's a good thing when moderators don't take things personal and have a thick skin but there are obvious limits. If moderators are open targets of course they are going to be hesitant when it comes to moderating members equally...

Clayton speaks of hall monitors and people always seem eager to mention censorship, but as per the definitions I posted earlier, a moderator without authority simply is not a moderator. A forum without moderators is... trollitup.

The policy @ RIU seems to be
1 you can say what you want until a mod notices it, (could be days could be weeks, even months
2 when a mod notices an offending post they will edit it or remove it
3 if an offending post is reported by a user they will remove it quickly
4 the editing or removing of posts is open to abuse, some mods tend to edit posts and threads in favour of particular users

over at the MNS forum the situation was much worse, there were no mods of any kind
folk were bullying each other all the time, spoiling each others grow threads etc
and none of the offending posts were removed for a very long time, many still remain

at riu they let the trolls shit allover the place, but they do try to clean it up afterwards

an alternative would be something like grasscity where the mods close threads very quickly
when there is the slightest difference of opinion , i find that forum boring

peace

I walked outside, there were people of different sizes and shapes, with varied hues and it pleased me.

There are a butt load of sub forums here and an ass load of threads, and at times a double ass load of post's in each one all handled by a handful of volunteer mods.
I monitor my e-mail for reported post's and try and keep up on each of mine, however, it is a LOT of reading that can get monotonous at times.
And then when a post does stand out, but is just on the edge of being offensive you have to decide: Do I NEED to get rid of that one or not ?
It is a pretty subjective activity at times.

Addendum. I wanted to add the missing space above, and the edit window is misbehaving ... something about ten characters.
I thought it was me. Haven't been able to edit a post properly for a day or two. Exasperated, I had my head on my desk and my hands on the monitor...10 fckg characters.
