My kids and wife only know how to open windows and turn on lights. Not close them or turn them off....... seriously.

Drives me nucking futs.

We also like our place cold in the summer and keep it @ around 68 f. My ac runs virtually non stop all summer and my place is over 2k sq. ft. Our bill rarely goes over 400 and this is running several K in lights as well. Now I do have a good ac and installed it myself. Sealed every joint, Built every fitting and also insulated it all. I guarantee I have no leaks. It's my profession.

I'm rather proud of my system...It's a masterpiece. Now to get the heat exchanger on my wood stove ducted in to my house ducting..... One day.

100 yr. old homes can be energy hogs. I assume the place you speak of is similar.
just found out my home was built in 1880, i know of what you speak for sure..

No mistake. We did 55 the worst year. Everyone thinks I'm nuts. I even went back and asked my father just to make sure I remember correctly.
That looks about 3 cords. A pick up bed is only a little over 1/4 chord. I've seen "chords" sold that were no where near a chord, not even 1/2 chord. A good chord should weight over a ton.

How many stoves? Couldn't burn that much in just one.
One stove. Dad filled it in the morning, stuffed it. I would get home at 3ish and sometimes it would be out, most the time just coals. I would tend it, then dad again at 5ish and crank it up till he went to bed and filled it again for overnight. There were also times when a blacksmiths melting spoon was used so it the stove would get so hot that it would "chirk" as my dad called it.

That's more than three, that's the first dump truck brought in, usually 5. We supplemented what we took down outback.

I'd say a full size bed holds closer to half cord. Esp. if you go above the sides and half assed toss/stack it. I can get close to two cords on my 14' tandem axle w/ 16" sideboards. Matter of fact I just brought a load home the other day and it stacked up to almost exactly two cords. 4x4x8 seems like a lot but it really isn't.

and tonage really does depend on a few things. Type of wood and more importantly moisture content. Maple loses a TON of weight after a year of drying.

I grew up in a house built in 1890. Couldn't keep it warm in the winter. Sometimes it was 45F inside, -20 outside. We wore coats inside the house. My bedroom had no heat. My life depended on an electric blanket.

No one here has to believe me, that's fine. I'm talking about a house built in 1850 that was 2,000sq/ft that had two different foundations from different additons.

I can't see all of it, just what's in the picture. A fire place can burn that much wood, and only heat the area right in front of it.

I'm going to burn some fire right now. I'm going to apply it to some ganja and because of the mountain man comment I'm going to smoke it out of an antler piece made by a Native American friend of mine.
