I'm using a place at the moment with of of those smart meters.. it's not the total usage over the month that bothers me its the fact that they can no doubt see big amounts of electricity being used in a patteren 12/12 - 18/6. I don't feel safe going very high on the kw with one of these meters. All it takes it somebody to check your account and your no doubt busted. With more and more properties having these smart meters installed I'm pretty sure it won't be long before we would need to get our power from other means..

i personally really do not believe this is a concern, or at least at the moment
these smart meters do have some interesting capabilities you can download the pdf documents for you model of meter
it will list all the features they have, but this might worry you more
i have mine lol , still most of these technologies are not implemented
smell and police informants are the main concern
loose lips sink ships and all that
still i would not feel comfortable using 10kw in a residiental property myself
i would try to acquire a business deal and claim the usage is for some type of machinery that i operate because i am self employed
if you explain it first and let them know you will be using lots of power it still should not be a problem
if you worry about the 12/12 pattern this is simple you can run your lights between 11-14 hours during flower with very little difference
in production, you can also run two flower rooms and have one switch on when the other switches off, which would show a continuous 24hur usage

I started with NFT years ago and have pretty much stuck with it every since.. I've been tempted by DWC a few times but the results I get from NFT are too good to give any serious thoughts to changing.
I've heard talk of them having computer programs in place to detect patterns but I doubt it and if they did it would no doubt be for HIGH wattage 12/12. As far as I know the smart meter sends back the usage every 15 minutes. Googling the subject of growing with a smart meter just brings a couple of news articles of the programs in place to catch growers and other growers in forums obviously getting paranoid and freaking out about them. Doesn't make for good reading either way.
Wouldn't risk a serious grow in a place with a smart meter.. I think you'd be the one to find out that they do monitor them if you did! The flipping idea with 2 rooms at different times for constant usage is good though.. high constant usage can easily be explained.. like computers and servers running 24/7.. however high wattage on 12/12 or 18/6 or whatever is really only used for one thing and we all know what that is

True enough, depends where you live I suppose, they're pretty common where I am so don't look out of place. Either is a more feasible option cost wise than these units. Not a bad idea if they were more common place and reasonable cost. They're just not within most people's reach and may be a while before they are.Being the only person on your street with solar panels covering every tile and half a dozen windmills spinning on top of your house trying to power your grow might just be more conspicuous than using the electricity in the first place..

This thread is getting annoying. All these things you want exist. Tons of people have natural gas generators for tons of reasons. Some want to power their well or certain circuits when the power goes out, some want to power their whole house. Some people need life support, that depend on them if the power goes out.
Don't act like this stuff doesn't exist, or your the first person to think about it.
I've never met someone who's been busted by power company. Ask me how many have been busted by neighbor or exgirlfriend/wife....

This turned out to be a pretty popular thread.
But in all reality power companies dont care unless your not paying your bills. Think about it the more power you use the more money they make.
Besides all of that. Think of what technology there is out there today. There is really no way for them to tell what you are using in your house.
Would be pretty funny for the cops to raid your house and find out that you arent growing but have a huge entertainment room with 20,000 watts worth of amps, 90 inch tv, heaters in your seats and subs everywhere. You just never know what the power is being used for and it gives them no reason to come in your house to see.
I can see if your using a whole house to grow. Smell, power consumption, and whatever else may be present. Neighbors, friends, neighborhood crime watch.
There was a guy busted here in my area a few months ago. had over 300 plants in his house. Not sure what he got out of it or how he got caught but I know he got busted. Plus it was on the news.
With everything else set aside. Just don't tell anyone, (don't brag) keep it you and no one else, make it so there is no way to see in this room, and keep a lock on your grow room in case someone get curious.
The main reasons people get caught is they open there mouth, someone sees something they shouldn't have, or your girlfriend / wife rats on you.
Otherwise I really wouldn't worry about it.
What we all need to figure out is how to produce power for cheaper. Instead of paying a high electric bill find a way to produce electric that doesn't cost hardly anything.
Would be great to run 2 1000 watters and not pay to run emm. That would be the seller right there. IMHO

Agreed, unless you're running a huge operation, I doubt anyone would even look at it. There are many reasons you would/could use a lot of power off-hours and cops don't/can't monitor usage, only the electricity supplier. If the cops have a VALID reason to obtain/request (warrant) the information from the electricity supplier, then you have something to worry about. Otherwise, keep your grow quiet, don't tell anyone, keep your smell in check and you'll be fine. Don't think about this stuff when you're puffing one, it tends to make you more paranoid than when your straight

Power companies don't just call the cops because you use a lot of electricity. If the police are investigating you, your electrical usage is something they can find out, but the power company won't report you.
Some people spend a bunch of time in the garage using power tools and welders, shop lights, heat, etc. Unless you are smoking the meter with thousands of watts, I wouldn't worry about it. Hell my wife and daughter don't know light switches have an off position and at any given time there are lights on in a half dozen rooms that no one is in. That's a grow light right there.

For most people, it would be hard to generate electricity cheaper than the power company provides it.
If you think about it, electricity is pretty cheap. I know it is more expensive in some places, but overall electricity is cheap.
And if you are looking for easy power options, even to run a couple 1000s plus gear, if you have a dryer in your house, you have the perfect setup. Just don't use the dryer when your lights are on and you wont need any electricians to come anywhere near your grow space. Unplug the lights when they are off, dry your fucking clothes, and put it back in for when the timer kicks on.
If some dude was coming into your store buying a completely legal product, but just a lot of them, would you call the cops on him? Power company isn't going to help the police unless the police have a warrant, in which case you are fucked anyway because they have been watching your ass and are just building a case against you, and your power bills at that point would just be icing on the cake.
As long as you are not stealing from the power company, they don't care. Now, a self righteous repair man might smell your grow and tell on your ass, but that is not the companys doing, that would be the doing of an individual.

Oh i know this to well. Was just saying that would be something to design.
I know there is a guy in the Poconos that live on top of one of the mountains that uses a 16' copper rod that has been driven in the ground and a 20' x 20' metal screen to gather static from the air. He in turn powers his lights with it. Pretty interesting concept. I wouldn't believe it but I seen it for myself. I have always been interested in free energy. These are ways to get free energy however these small simple systems will not supply the power we need to even light our lights let alone sustain them for 18 hours at a time.
But it would be awesome to not have to worry about being connected to the grid and paying that bill when it comes in the mail.

I seen a thread one time that told you what to look for if you are being watched. If you pay close attention you see things that change in your area or the frequency of the flybys in your area. people sitting in areas for periods of time that usually arent. The occasional credit report inquiry and so on. It was a really interesting thread and told aload about what you may see when a case is being built about you. In some areas the meter-maid will visit monthly, when before you may have seen him every other month or so.
or seeing someone other then your meter maid gather the kws used over a period of time. Like I said there was a lot in the post and I can see someone picking up on it.
I work from home so I am always here. Everything gets shipped to me and I only go to the store maybe once a week. I see everyone who comes and everyone that leaves. But if for some reason I don't see or hear anyone my pit/saint bernard does and lets me know. His bark is so deep no matter where I am in the house or even outside I can hear him. He works better then a state of the art security system.
Be honest with you I don't worry about growing here. Even if I were to grow in 50% of my house. I still wouldn't worry about it.
The only repair man in or around my house is me.
