Hey Boohoo,

When I first started, I would have the seedlings under just a CFL or regular lamp pointed towards it. Seemed to not give any problems and the seedlings grew just fine and strong for the first 2 weeks. After about a week or so when I purchased lights, I had them either under T5's or vegged under metal Halides. I only flower my plants under HPS. I don't think it's a good idea to stick seedlings under HPS.

Just my .2cents but I'm sure someone can give another opinion.

You can't pick up a box of CFLS ? its like $15 for a box of 10 23watt lights.

If not and you must go the HPS route just keep 2 and half - 3 feet above the seedlings you'll be okay!

Keep the cfl on them till their a little bigger, seedlings Do Not Require a lot of light, as they get bigger towards transplant time move them to the edge of your 600, transplant and stick'm under the 600 and watch them go

If cost of running your HID is an issue. use the CFL.

If cost isn't an issue use your HID.
These plants grow under the Sun. It's a Lot Lot Lot Lot brighter than your HID.

600watt HPS, you want that light @ 18" away from your plant. If you get your light to close you'll burn your plant, keep that in mind. If your to far away you'll get un-wanted stretch.
Your using a HPS you should have compact growth using it. not alot of stretch.
The charts should help you.

I start mine under the same light from day one that I grow it under from start to finish. I don't use the paper towel method either. I stick mine in a piece of PH'd rock wool and bury it in Plagron Grow Mix. A few days later I have a healthy seedling. Works every time.

I pretty much do the same in terms of germination. When I first started I did the paper towel method and was not happy with the germ rate. Now, I ALWAYS use Rapid Root plugs and I kid you not, I always have 100% germ rate. In terms of lighting, I do scale to different types, such as seedlings are under T5's, then I veg under Metal Halide then for flower I switch to HPS.

Good luck BooHoo! Keep us posted on your grow.

Mine go straight to the 1000w room. Those store bought lights have nothing on the sun. Just make sure they don't get too dry or hot. Keep a clear plastic lid over the young ones which will keep your humidity up. This will take less watering as well.

I use a very similar method as this. Standard and it works a treat.

I always plant in either plugs which i see isnt an option for you right now or straight into my coco(or whatever medium you use) i just figure why move something if i dont have to. Just make sure to start them in something small untill they fill out the space (solo cup size is fine) imo growth suffers when i put them straight into a 1 or 2 gal pot.

as for the lighting just go buy a box of cfl's as suggested in the daylight (blue) color spectrum for 10bucks and if you dont have any lamps or sockets laying around you can get ones that plug right into an outlet for like 1.50 a piece at walmart/homedepot/lowes etc.

No, don't be worried! The paper towel method just wasn't the method for me. Honestly, was probably error on my part but an old wise man put me on to just sticking them in solo cups with soil, or the Rapid Root plugs. Keep doing what you're doing. You'll learn from many people and many techniques. Next time try the rapid root plugs. Maybe you'll like them!

Good luck!

Patience is huge in this hobby/business we're in. Give it 24-48 hours. If nothing, those plugs I mention are super cheap, little bag is less than $10 bucks. Or throw it in the medium you plan on using but in a small solo cup.

Using the paper towel method and into jiffy pellets. 48hrs to germinate, 48hrs in jiffy pot to breaking free. Now for the Cherry Bomb ;)
