Yes, but I think it is a mispronounciation. My guess is that "Ship Load" became "Shit Load" which may have became "Shit Ton" somehow. Just a guess but go into church or somewhere and blurt out "Ship Load" really loud and see how many dirty looks you get due to misinterpretation.

I disagree with your explanations. I guess that's the joy of opinions I understand the use of the phrase "to be on fire", such as your example with Jordan, but he is not fire itself, he is on fire.
