I was dropping tobacco sticks at 10. I worked on a farmer and surveyor at 13, I made four something an hour and paid taxes and the whole lot. this guy was legal beagle. At 18 did a stint in the Air Force (honorable.) Got out went to college and worked. At 25 started a business. At 28 me and my wife lost everything, two cars and a house. It was hard but I kept us fed. My wife signed us up on food stamps, I was upset. Ended up using them for a year. We are now back on our feet. I still look back and feel some guilt.

When you were doing well you contributed
When you didn't do well you took contributions

That's civilisation.

Make a point of paying taxes for the next 25 years
That's how you redeem yourself - you help pay for other peoples food stamps.

When do they pay for others?

Don't feel guilty. You paid into it.

if food stamps are just a liberal trick to create dependency on government, then why do most people get off of them so quickly?

I've seen both sides of the coin. I've seen people use them short term, like we did, and I've seen three generations in one house drawing benefits all their lives. I judge neither, just my feelings on my personal situation. I know I shouldn't feel guilty, I just do.

As others have said, you contributed to the program so no need to beat yourself up over it.
Be thankful they were there when your family needed them (some people would like to see the program eliminated or reduced) and good luck in the future.

Thats the truth. We both walked for about 9 months until we could buy a beater to drive.

Sometimes we have to take, there is no other choice. Few years back I injured my leg leaving me on crutches for almost half a year. I couldn't work (manual labour..woop) and paid rent ect from savings. After a couple months I had nothing and if it wasn't for handouts i'd have been on the streets. Glad to hear you're back on your feet matey.

I was on food stamps for over a year. I canceled them a few months ago.

The food stamp program as it is makes me sick...

One should not be able to use food stamps to buy a 20 oz coke at a convenient store, much less a red bull. But they can do both.

I've heard people in line at a taco bell one time try to use their food stamps, then bitch when they couldn't.

As an addict, I've seen people, lots of people, sell them off as soon as they get them for half price.

The system is designed to foster abuse.

The supermarket is the only place they should be able to be used, and only on certain items that meet some sort of nutritional standard, and are not 'premium' items, in other words, ground beef is fine, not filet mignion. Beans are good, tater chips are junk food. Milk does a body good, red bull and soda is tooth rot.

Also, they should modestly priced hygiene items.

Give something back when you can. Me, I help kids when I can. I donate shit when I can to local places that help out children. One day I acquired 10 huge cases of toilet paper. I gave 9 to the children's home and kept one case. I went over a year and never had to buy toilet paper.
