The local Blacks found him too moderate and rejected him
BUT, whilst canvassing for that election, he realised that the rest of the population were willing to accept him without a regard for his race.
Many of the American Blacks who have done well in 'across the board' electioneering are NOT the decedents of slaves - who have been in America for 400 years.
They are the first generation offspring of far more recent immigrants who went to America of their own choice.

The sons of immigrants - like Powell and Obama, have far less hatred towards the system in America.
Many African Americans have based their entire identities on hatred of the White Man
Afterall, having a convenient reason for all ones failures and humiliations must be a very comforting asset.
This attitude is now changing.
How can you blame the racism of the system for everything after that same system elected a Black President?
