In my experience, when you under water it is very obvious. The soil becomes really hard and dry, leaves will start to wilt, there will be a dry space between the soil and the container... I recommend using good soil like FoxFarm. It's high quality and has never disappointed. Whatever it is, I don't think you're going to save the first one. The stem has a sort of rotten look where it's folded, not just on the top but the little branches on the bottom, too. If it's soil related...
