I wouldn't. Pots stay wet too long if your roots don't fill up enough of it. You'll get faster growth if you use a medium size pot in between so you can dry the roots out more times and force them to grow out into the pot.

I don't think that's a good thing. That smell is the chlorofil breaking down into sugar. If your not getting it I suspect your either starving your girls so much before harvest there is basically no green left, which isn't so bad, but your leaving weight on the table. Or more likely your drying...
