I think the big change will come when there will be batteries that can store the energy. Of course there are already those batteries, but I mean payable and long lasting. But there are some very interesting experiments going on with storing electricity in sweet vs saltwater basins.

Still will follow your test (if you do a growjournal or something like that) But for a true test, 2 rooms would be better, because then you can run each room in a setup that matches the light. But still... interesting test and the outcome will give you a good insight.

I would suggest a fixture with strips for your grows. Both you and @DoubleAtotheRON run big rooms with aisles. With strip fixtures you can hang your lamp lower and thus have less loss of light. Also a more even spreading of the light and better penetration.
