I touch the inside of my rez or any of the equipment in it, if I feel a little gunge I know its time to change the solution. Although I do use Hygrozyme to get rid of pathogen growth & I can still see bits of algae in the water, doesnt seem to affect the plants.

I forgot to ask you this question in the "Quick question" post: When it comes to drying what temps & humidity do you dry at? And what rule of thumb do you use to confirm that the process is complete?
