nitrogen burn characteristically begins at the tips and works back. if you notice, in one of the pictures, the entire stalk has turned brown. I'd guess a massive pH imbalance causing lockouts of several nutrients. but that would be a huge guess, since i have no clue what else could have gone on...

and, by the way, too much nitrogen MAY or CAN "squeeze" the leaves together, but so CAN other things. That's the point of getting more details. To rule out other possibilities.

so why are there divergent answers? the etiology of the plant distress can only be guessed at, just as you've done. The point isn't that we can't guess at it, its that, if you want to come onto a forum and get useful responses, its necessary to give a little background on your plant, growing...
