I once had a 250 HPS two inches away from a wall, and the glass was 3 inches away from the plant, had one exhaust and one fan and it was fine. that was a 16"x18"x4.5' area. Smaller lighting but I think the space was smaller than yours too.

Yeah this stuff is tricky, that is why they have expensive conversion bulbs for MH balists to use HPS and HPS conversion bulbs for MH. And then the difference between the MH and the HPS has to do with the capacitor. ANd then you really can only disable the capacitor on 1000 watt HPS to use MH...
