The stuff on the buckets is aluminum tape to block the light out of the bucket! Kind of expensive but it is the only way I had to completely make the buckets light proof...(I couldn't find black buckets in time).

I'm no pro but I do not think ~300 PPM is too much to really worry about... The PH might be a little high for a hydro setup, I believe you want it 5.5-6.0 but check with someone who isn't a noob like me! I am just on my 1st DWC grow, so I am only going on what I have read. Best of luck to you!
