All I can say is I see plenty of growers using it in actual soil..
I grow in ProMix HP so take my comments for what they are worth :mrgreen:

IIRC I made my final decision based on cost. At my local store 2 gallons of vermiculite was $26, 5 gallons of perlite was $15...
Wedding Cheesecake Auto in 4 gallons of perlite...
