Lower your lights! I use a CFL setup and I've been keeping the bulb 1-2" above tops or at the same height as the tops but between the two....

Strip the insulation back a little and wire cap them. Looking at the size of wire you could use orange or blue wire nuts (there for smaller gauge wires)
