If it was my plant. I would circle it with some mesh fencing. If there in the ground, there is no need to worry about over watering them. Personally, I use more water in flowering than most people. I don't know of a case of root rot in the flowering cycle.

What I suggest are bamboo plants. The leaves are similar in shape. It pays to be cautious but there are virtually no cases where aircraft passing over have resulted in someone being busted for growing outside. If no one knows and nothing ever leaves your property, growing is pretty safe.
