Sounds like this might be attributed to using tap water (that is probably softened) what would be the better water for them, distilled or something with minerals added?

Yes it is drying out each time they're watered (every other day), so by your scheduled they will be fed every sixth day 1/4th strength feed /2 day/ water /2 day/ water /2 day/ feed. Are you saying you think its an N problem?
