thanks for the info! i usually water with nutes, then do 2 waterings with plain water, then back to nutes again. hopefully something to that effect is correct? as for the lights, they were pretty much always within 3" of the plants and they just grew that much. now i just have them arranged...

they are the 26 (i think) watt 2700k CFL's from home depot. I have 11 of those. Then i have a T8 light up above with 2 32 watt bulbs that are also 2700k. Nothing special was done that i can think of. The plants did stretch a little bit but there are definitely a lotttt of bud sites on them...
